Can Antrim do a Laois and lower the colours of a provincial team?

I think they could if they have a fully fit panel. Their home form is usually good.

As a disappointed Wexford man this week, I'd be very wary of Antrim if we were playing them next.

But then again, if we do end up playing them, it'll be on the back of victory over Kilkenny in what would surely be a frenzied Nowlan Park. We'd be in a much better place then, and I'd be feeling far more confident.

I think Antrim would be right up against it if they played Galway, Kilkenny, a Wexford team that had just beaten Kilkenny, or any of the three Munster teams they could face.

That just leaves Dublin. If they end up playing Antrim, they'd be going in there on the back of a demoralising defeat to Kilkenny last weekend, and what would be another defeat to Galway this weekend. That could be Antrim's best chance all right.

Antrim are the McDonagh favourites. The McDonagh winner this year will take on Cork or Waterford.
Dublin or Wexford will be travelling to Offaly or Carlow.

or Tipp :-D

Why not? I think they would have a chance against a lot of teams. Glesson is doing a good job. Its a nice bonus for the Mcdonagh Cup teams but I still dont get why they are allowed in. You have 5 teams in the Liam Mc who are gone and the first and second McD teams get straight into a Prelin q final. It begs the question whether Tipp would have a better chance in the Liam Mc next year if they were in the McDonagh Cup in 2023 - if and when something like that happens it will be changed. Imagine avoiding the bear bit that is Munster and getting withing 3 games of an Al Ireland?

The GAA do some mind boggling things but I dont get this type of thing. The sentimet is good but to get into the latter stages of the All ireland series makes no logical sense and it wouldnt happen in any other sport.

tiobraid, you ask a fair question. The answer is compromise. McDonagh teams have facilitated the provincial round robin. The preliminary quarter-finals are the sweetener in return for their understanding and support.

I do fully understand why its set up that way but its a strange one for me.

It is an unusual one for sure. A great idea for the promotion of the game however. Two teams who have performed well in the McDonagh get to host quality opposition. I'd like to see Kerry host a Preliminary Quarter-final. We were denied twice during the pandemic championships due to scheduling.
If Offaly qualify this weekend, they should sell out Tullamore for hosting the Munster/Leinster 3rd placed team.

Antrim have a shocking recent record against the Dubs. Their record, especially in Antrim, is far better against us.

Look at the Leinster minor hurling championship.

Split into 3 tiers. 2 teams from tier 2 made the final.

Getting a few wins before having a crack at the favoured teams helps. It build momentum, buzz, buy in and probably funding in the smaller counties.

Kerry would be better off in that Leinster tiered structure. They could play counties at their level.
