Ned Flynn - Westmeath And Midlands Radio 3 (MR3) - RIP

(Oldest Posts First)

the voice of Ned will be missed by many around the midlands..from Offaly games MR3 go to Westmeath, where Ned mentions the large and the not so large little clubs in all codes and all levels, from Mullingar to to Castletowngeoghan and Castletown Finea, Brownstown, Delvin and St. Lomans and Cricklewood (pronounced wrong probably by me) etc...only he could report on them in such a way even though as an outsider you would not ever know about these clubs but regardless of competition, Ned was detailed in his commentary and reporting and the names would stick in your mind..Condolences to his family and colleagues in MR3, he will be missed from the Radio.

I had the pleasure of the late Ned's company on many an occasion, to say he was some character would be a massive understatement without doubt the wittist man I've ever met. It was always a pleasure to drop in at Connie's in castlepollard to hear Ned in full flight behind the bar , a huge loss to Castletown/Finea and Pollard and to the Gaa family. Some crack in heaven tonight.RIP Ned.

Indeed. May he rest in peace. A lovely man with great yarns. A passion against Meath football and a unbelievable admiration for them as well.
Been a Meath diehard in the west I had many a good humoured argument with Ned. Again condolences to his family.

Very sorry to hear that news. Ned was a regular on Mids103 Sports coverage of Westmeath games, and a passionate supporter of The Lake County. My sympathy to his family.
I think you mean Crookedwood GAA club, on the Mullingar to Castlepollard Road. Castletown Geoghegan club are near Lough Ennell.

Think it's actually Castletown/finea that he means. On the Westmeath Meath/Cavan border.

Thanks but I know that, passed through there many times. Castletown Geoghegan is a separate dual club in South Westmeath, they are 5-6 miles from Ballinamere and Westmeath.

Gremlins intervened. It should have read Ballinagore and Kilbeggan, not Ballinamere and Westmeath.
Sorry to be pedantic on a sad main topic.

Oh I know it too. Been a royal exile in the annexed west for over 20 years.

I missed Ned Flynn's passing - his was a familiar voice for many years on Midlands 103 GAA coverage.

Just on his club - Castletown-Finea/Coole/Whitehall.

Would anybody here know what the supporters of that club would shout in support of their club during matches? The full title seems a bit long!

Would it be simply "Come on Castletown?"

Finea would have been known as "the slahers " many years ago before the amalgamation. So mabey that's the call to go to battle?

On the results on radio it's only ever called Castletown-Finea...

It could refer to Myles Slasher' O'Reilly, who fought the English on the Bridge at Finea, in the Cromwellian wars.

Correct, small bust in the village to celebrate Myles, held the bridge on his own till reinforcement arrived from granard i think. Great full back when he could be bothered.
