In summary, Rugby League gets a £16m loan in view of its valuie to the community in the north of England.

Food for thought in GAA circles, bearing in mind that the GAA has a similar role in Ireland.

Firstly, Rugby League is a professional sport which, unlike the GAA, doesn't receive regular handouts from the government. Without this loan, which will have to repaid, a lot of clubs could go under.

Secondly, the GAA has plenty of reserves of money, so why would it need a loan off the taxpayers?

Rugby league has hundreds of clubs of which 37 are professional, less than half of those full time.

It is a predominantly amateur game. Like most sports. Soccer, rugby union and GAA included.

No. The Rugby League, who have been given the loan, is the governing body for professional rugby league in England. It administers the England national rugby league team, the Challenge Cup, Super League and the Rugby League Championships. It has nothing to do with the amatuer game which is governed by the British Amateur Rugby League Association.
