Tier 2 Explained

(Oldest Posts First)

There seems to be some confusion around Tier 2.

Tier 1 will consist of Division 1 teams, Division 2 teams (Top 6 and Division 3 finalists), provincial finalists and the Tier 2 winner from the year before.

This means Tier 1 will consist of 16 to 25 teams.
This means Tier 2 will consist of 16 to 7 teams.

It's a GAA solution. There are back doors and side doors for more than 16 to join the Tier 1 party.

Thanks for clearing that up legend, I feel privileged to be sharing a discussion forum with someone as wise as yourself.

Is it a similar set up in terms of qualifiers and Super 8's for Tier 1 or is that gone? If Tyrone/Mayo for example get knocked out in the first round, where do they go next?

How many rounds of qualifiers will there be next year? not that it matters too much as they don't show the first couple of rounds anyway.

The Qualifiers will consist of two rounds. Their will be a preliminary round added when their are more than 16 teams.

Tier 1 of 16 teams;
Round 1: 8 teams.
Round 2: 4 provincial runners-up and 4 Round 1 winners.
Super 8: 4 provincial winners and 4 Round 2 winners.

Tier 1 of more than 16 teams;
Preliminary Round: This will happen because the Tier 2 winner and/or provincial finalist(s) did not qualify through their league position.
Round 1: 8 teams.
Round 2: 4 provincial runners-up and 4 Round 1 winners.
Super 8: 4 provincial winners and 4 Round 2 winners.

Mayo and Tyrone are in 2020 Division 1. Division 1 teams cannot be relegated to Division 3 in 2020. All 2020 Division 1 teams are guaranteed a qualifier spot.
2020 Division 2 teams have to finish in the Top 6 or qualify for their provincial final.
2020 Division 3 teams have to finish in the Top 2 or qualify for their provincial final.
2020 Division 4 teams have to qualify for their provincial final.

A standard has been set to earn an All-Ireland qualifier spot. While all focus is on Division 2 and 3, Division 1 is crucial for the guarantee of a qualifier spot in that year. Getting out of Division 4 is obviously important for getting to Division 3.

Will counties embrace championship football in the league? That's essentially what has been votes for when Tier 2 was approved.

Thanks for that legend, so we're playing Cork in PUC in the Munster semifinal on the June weekend and once Cork get promoted to division 2 in the league they can afford to lose that semifinal and still play in tier 1 from what I can make out.

So if tipp don't get promoted and make the Munster final by beating limerick Waterford and Clare they too can make it to tier 1.

And Clare by virtue of being in division 2 in 2020 also will be in tier 1 even if they're relegated to division 3 .

Oooooh you might be right there, how does it work in other provinces?

Could we have like legend says around 20 teams in tier 1? That's brilliant if so.

Typical GAA.

Create a Tier 2 and then try to keep everyone out of it.

Yes there can be up to 25 in tier 1.

There will most likely be 16-19 teams each year, depending on if the Previous tier 2 champions also won promotion to division 2.

Most years there'll just be at most 2 division 3/4 teams making provincial finals.

That's brilliant, thanks for the clarity, sounds like the intelligentsia that run the GAA are at about the same level as the geniuses in Leinster house.
