It's a funny one, sometimes outside managers work well and sometimes it doesn't. We had John Myler in carlow and it didn't work and then Colm Bonnar comes in and he's won everything. Same with Leix and Eddie Brennan. I will say for Quaid that he had Kildare at a very good level before he left but in Westmeath maybe the players wanted a change. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1517 - 27/07/2019 21:03:04 2217247 Link 0 |
True but you have to learn your trade too and maybe it was too big of a job too soon. Wexford also hadn't the young players then that they have now. Without trying to sound disrespectful I don't think there were too many top players on that team...

I know some of the players might not have been as good but more importantly they werent fit, played a bad tactical game, and were poorly motivated. Obviously Colm Bonnar has done well since so has probably got better at the tactics and motivation and realised that being fit enough to play for only 55 minutes is no good in a game that lasts 70. The Carlow lads were maybe easier to manage as a team in that they wouldve been very familiar with playing with and against eachother as there are only 4 senior clubs.

Let it be said the Westmeath CB have treated Joe Quaid with the same ruthlessness and disrespect as they did to Pat Flanagan exactly 2 years ago when he was sacked, the first he heard about it was when his wife told him she read it on social media, enough said. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 2904 - 28/07/2019 15:35:08 2217608 Link 0 |
It was with Offaly that Pat Flanagan learned of his sacking from his wife via social media but the Westmeath CB did treat him with contempt as well. Flanagan had brought Westmeath to Division 1 and was told he would have to come in for another interview. From speaking to a member of the panel, the players were surprised by the decision to get rid of Quaid and they found out by social media. Next year will be a baptism of fire for whoever comes in next.

Thanks for that.

I agree but they dont exactly treat them any better than external managers (i.e. Pat Flanagan and Kevin Martin in offaly - both dismissed in deplorable fashion). If a team is going to put in a home grown manager they need to be given a number of years to achieve what they want! i.e. 5 years. Look at Cody, Harte and Gavin! Continuity is what works!
