Leitrim chairman calls for Tomás Ó Sé to stand aside as a pundit

After Tomás Ó Sé  questioned whether it suited weaker counties not to field in games, the Leitrim chairman said Ó Sé’s position as a pundit should be considered.

Sligo had to withdraw from the Connacht SFC this weekend because of an outbreak of Covid-19 in their camp while Leitrim had to give a walkover in the Allianz FL in October for similar reasons.

In a tweet yesterday Tomás Ó Sé questioned the motives of those counties not fulfilling fixtures: “Why is it all weaker counties that seem to be in bother with this, does it suit them?

“I think this is very disappointing. The fixture should have been fulfilled if at all possible.”

Asking if it suits weaker counties not to play games has drawn a furious backlash from Leitrim Chairperson Enda Stenson who spoke to Ocean FM this morning.

“Tomás Ó Sé  is a pundit, he is not appointed or elected by anybody to question anybody and I think it is a disgrace that he would even cast any doubt on what either Sligo or Leitrim have done to protect the health and wellbeing of their players,” said Stenson. “It is not right or it is not fair.

“He is just promoting his own agenda, to promote himself as a pundit. That’s what all this is about.

“What Tomás Ó Sé is at is unforgivable and I think he should consider his position as a pundit when he is prepared to condemn lesser people and ask ‘does it suit us’”

Stenson explained that the full Sligo panel travelled to Leitrim for a challenge game a number of weeks ago and a huge effort was being put in in preparation for the championship, which makes O Se’s questioning of Leitrim and Sligo’s intentions particularly hard to take.

“For him to question their bona fide is not fair, it’s not right.

“We have been involved in the GAA as long as Kerry. We had 14 players available for the league game against Down. We are the smallest unit in the GAA.

“What Tomas O Se is doing is demeaning everyone who is involved in a smaller county. For him to come in his position and say that is just a disgrace.”
