McMahon backs split season

Dublin's Philly McMahon

Eight-time All-Ireland winner Philly McMahon has described the GAA’s split season as “a very good idea”.

Croke Park has confirmed that next year will see the inter-county campaign conclude by July 18th, with ambitions to commence the club season on the weekend of July 24/25.

"When you look at how good the club championship was this year across the country, it was refreshing," McMahon said on RTE's The Marty Morrissey Show yesterday.

"It was great for my club [Ballymun Kickhams] particularly because we have six Dublin players, so we really got together and we showed that when we can get together as a group, that we can perform at a really good level and we won the Dublin championship.

"I think having the split season is a very good idea. It's going to be tough for inter-county players that maybe got to the All-Ireland semi-final and final to get started again.

"But that gratitude of being able to put the jersey on and get out and play football, I don't think anybody will take that for granted."
