Penalty shoot-outs "a very unfair scenario", says Brogan

Bernard Brogan has described penalty shoot-outs to decide GAA games as “a very unfair scenario”.

The 2020 All-Ireland senior football and hurling championships are set to get underway in the coming weeks and, given the condensed timeframe for competitions this year, the GAA have opted not to stage replays, meaning games must be concluded on the day.

Brogan, a seven-time All-Ireland winner with Dublin, says he wouldn’t like to see a clash between two heavyweights in the championship decided on penalties.

"I think it's a very unfair scenario," he told FM104. "It's obviously there for a reason, obviously finishing out a game that if you keep playing it could stay level, so I understand the reason for it. We do have penos in our game so we do have a precedent there.

"It's hard to argue with it as a decision but I'd be very disappointed to see whoever is in an All-Ireland final, or a big Dublin-Kerry game, or Dublin-Mayo, Dublin-Meath, coming down to penos because I think it's such a pressure on the players.

"It's something that I'm sure they carry heavily on themselves. Look at the lads who missed last night (Ireland v Slovakia), I'm sure they're going to be very disappointed for a long, long time.

"I think it's a lot of pressure. In the rugby I think they have drop goals, would a free-taking (competition) or 45s be more aligned to the skills in our game?"
