Ladies Championship Draw

The draw for the Donegal Ladies Intermediate Championship was made on Sunday evening in Letterkenny, and it’s certainly a humdinger for John Mc Conigley’s side who are facing into four challenging fixtures over the next six weeks.

The ladies have been drawn in Group 1 and will face Milford, St. Mary’s Convoy, Naomh Muire and Ardara. Milford and St. Mary’s Convoy have been plying their trade in Division 1 of the league this term and will certainly be the better for it, while Ardara have been the Division 2 pacesetters for much of the campaign. Naomh Muire prevailed in the league fixture between the sides on Sunday past. It’s an intriguing draw and one could certainly say that it’s very much the group of death in the competition, but it’s a set of fixtures that the ladies are very much looking forward to.

The first game will be a home tie against Milford, followed by trips to Naomh Muire and Convoy. The final game will see Ardara making the trip to Portsalon in the first weekend of October.

Senior Ladies

Naomh Muire 4:12

Gaeil Fhánada 2:10

A Naomh Muire purple patch in the third quarter of Sunday morning’s game where they hit two goals and four points without reply proved the difference in an entertaining game at the Banks.

The game was played under the bright morning sunshine in Mullach Dearg with the 13 a side format providing plenty space for the attackers from both teams to operate in.

Siobhan Sweeney and Lauren Carr hit early point for the visitors but the home side soon settled and were ahead by the twelfth minute. They fired over a couple of quick points before then finding the back of net. Hannah Shiels fired over for the Gaels but that score was cancelled out by the home side in their next attack. Fanad regained control in the next period after the water break and reeled off four scores in the bounce. Siobhan Sweeney clipped a tidy effort over the bar and then added a second score in the following attack. Lauren Carr broke through the centre and buried to the corner of the net. Lauren’s second goal came in the 27th minute when an attempted point dropped in under the crossbar. From then until the break however, it was all Naomh Muire. They scored their second goal of the half and reeled off several points to edge a point ahead at the break.

The home side pressed home their advantage after the break. County player Roisin Rodgers was introduced by Naomh Muire and had a big impact. Gaeil Fhánada struggled to get hold of the ball during this period as the hosts punished at every opportunity to open up a significant gap by the second half water break. The Gaels finished the stronger and reeled off four points towards the end, three from Lauren Carr and an effort from Hannah Shiels, but the home side weren’t to be caught and were deserving winners at the end.

It was an open free flowing game of football, but the hosts were clinical with their goal opportunities which was key for them.

With the Championship draw now made, the ladies have a mouth watering clash with neighbours Milford next weekend which will surely focus the minds quite quickly, while many of the panel will also be in minor action during the week.

U10 Girls

The u10 Girls were back in action this weekend after making the short trip to play neighbours Milford at Moyle Park on Saturday morning.

The girls were brilliant throughout, and both the Gaeil Fhánada and Milford coaches will be impressed by the skills of their players and how well everyone performed. The Fanad girls have been working hard at training every week, and it was great to see so many girls taking part yesterday. Keep up the good work and well done to everyone involved.

Maith sibh a chailíní!

Gaeil Fhánada Le Chéile - Part 4

We are delighted to launch the fourth installment of our hugely popular Gaeil Fhánada Le Chéile programme.

It's aimed at Fanad exiles around the world (Ireland and abroad) and allows them to reconnect with and recontribute to the club.

There's some fantastic incentives again this year and we are calling on all our exiles to join this year. All funds raised go directly towards club development and this initiative has been hugely positive and beneficial for the club in recent years.

We will also be holding a once off draw for a Gaeil Fhánada jacket for everyone who responded to the invitation. So for anyone who hasn't responded yet, get in touch to be in with a chance to win!

Thanks again to everyone who has provisionally signed up!

Parish League - Week 1 Roundup

The Parish League got underway on Friday evening in Portsalon. The wet conditions didn’t deter the players who put on a great display of football during the course of the evening.

The Under 7 section coordinated by John Kerr saw the standings at the end of the first evening

1. Nearside, managed by Teresa Doherty = 4 points.

2. Glinsk, managed by Richard Carr = 2 points.

3. Mulroy, managed by Jerome Doherty = 2 points

In the U10 section sees Féile, managed by Eoghan Walsh lead the way on 4 points.

Gortnatraw N&S, managed by Maggie Friel are in second spot on 2 points.

Ballymagowan, managed by Christopher Mc Bride sit in third spot, also on 2 points, while Traigh a Loch, managed by Cathal Martin are in fourth place after week 1.

In the hotly contested U12 section

Seamus McAteer’s Knockdonnelly beat Colin McAteer’s Tullynadall by a single point in a fantastic contest. Meanwhile Sean Begley’s Shannagh drew in tightly fought contest with Eamonn Jackson's Mulroy.

A great night of football, with everything well set up for Week 2 this weekend.

Well done to all the players, and to all the coaches and coordinators, and a special thanks to Jessica Coll and Méabh Mc Ateer who did a great job refereeing the games.

Táimid ag súil go mór le cluichí seachtain a dó tráthnóna Dé hAoine.
