Naomh Conaill retained the Donegal senior football championship title after beating Kilcar in dramatic circumstances at MacCumhaill Park this evening.
The long-awaited 2020 final required extra-time and then penalties to decide who would take home the Dr Maguire Cup, with the holders eventually prevailing 4-2 on spot kicks after Ciaran Thompson netted the winner in Ballybofey. Kilcar brothers Ryan and Mark McHugh had their penalties saved by goalkeeper Stephen McGrath during the shoot-out.
Man-of-the-match Thompson contributed 1-5 for the winners in normal-time while Kevin McGettigan chipped in with 1-1 as a free from Kilcar's Paddy McBrearty sent the game to extra-time at 2-6 to 0-12. Thompson edged Naomh Conaill in front in extra-time but it was again McBrearty who sent it to penalties with another pointed free, 2-7 to 0-13.
Winning their fifth crown overall, it means that the Glenties are the first side to have successfully defended the Donegal SFC since St Eunan's in 2009.
