Mc Ateer’s men make it two from two in Division 3

Gaeil Fhánada 0:14 Naomh Bríd 0:08

Aidan Mc Ateer’s troops made it two from two in Trummon on Sunday afternoon after defeating Naomh Bríd in a tetchy league encounter. There were three changes from last week’s victory over Four Masters, with Eoin Mc Gonigle, Oisín Mc Fadden and Mark Friel coming into the team in place of Shaun Friel, Odhrán Shiels and Paddy Carr.

The hosts played with the aid of a very slight breeze in the opening period and were the first to trouble the scoreboard, firing a point in the opening minute of proceedings. Liam Mc Grenaghan, who had a brilliant day at the office responded from a placed ball to level it a moment later. Naomh Bríd edged ahead for the second time through a Thomas Gallagher 45 meter free, but Mc Grenaghan again responded after Eoghan Carr had been fouled. Carr was again involved in the next score, forcing a turnover which led to a tidy Bernard Mc Gettigan point on eight minutes which put Murray’s men into the lead for the first time.

Páirc Naomh Bríd wasn’t a place for the faint hearted this afternoon, but the Gaels really dug in for the next period, and between the eighth minute and the water break, they stretched their lead to three points. Two Séimí Friel points, a free and one from play, coupled with a Mc Grenaghan point from play left the Gaels six points to three ahead at the sos uisce.

It wasn’t to be plain sailing for the remainder of the half however, as the hosts had their best period of the game from there until half time, eating into the Gaeil Fhánada lead. Thomas Gallagher and Shane Walsh were on target with Bernard Mc Gettigan offering the sole Gaels response after good build up play from Ryan Mc Gonigle in the 28th minute. Half time: Gaeil Fhánada 0:07 Naomh Bríd 0:06.

The lads really stepped it up after the break,  reclaimed midfield superiority and had a period of dominance. Séimí Friel put two points between the sides after good work from Shaun Kerr and Jimmy Coyle, before Mc Gettigan did a great bit of defensive work plucking the ball out of the sky in front of his own goal as Naomh Bríd probed. Friel pointed his fourth after yet another foul on Carr, a move which began with a Shaun Kerr turnover. Friel struck for his third in succession with a monster point from an acute angle, with his brother Mark adding a further score after a strong Michael Sweeney charge through the centre. Liam Mc Grenaghan put six between the sides with ten minutes remaining, but two quickfire Naomh Bríd points to any thoughts of a comfortable finish to bed. Fergal Friel was introduced and immediately plucked an Eoin Mc Gonigle kick out from the sky and fed Mark Mc Ateer who was fouled. Mc Grenaghan showed great nerve to kick his fifth of the day which allowed the considerable Gaeil Fhánada support to breathe a sigh of relief. The hosts went in search of goal but a timely interception from  the recently introduced James Kerr averted a dangerous looking move as the game passed the thirty minute mark. The referee had little option but to dismiss two Naomh Bríd defenders to red cards in injury time, while Gaeil Fhánada finished the game with 14, receiving a late black card as well. Oisín Shiels finished off the scoring in the final minute of injury time, rounding off a Gaels break which swept the length of the field.

It’s always a good day at the office when you pick up two points away from home, so the lads will certainly take plenty positives from the performance. Liam Mc Grenaghan and Séimí Nanny hit some super scores over the hour while Eoghan Carr and Ryan Mc Gonigle did a huge amount of work both on and off the ball. This was the definition of a team performance however, with every man playing his part in a terrific battling performance. Next up for the lads is Moville in Páirc Uí Shiadhail next weekend.

Eoin Mc Gonigle, Shaun Kerr, James Gallagher, Oisín Mc Fadden, Bernard Mc Gettigan (0:02), Oisín Shiels (0:01), Jimmy Coyle, Ryan Mc Gonigle, Michael Sweeney, Eoghan Carr, Mark Mc Ateer, Liam Mc Grenaghan (0:05), Séimí Friel (0:05), Alan Mc Ateer, Mark Friel (0:01).

Fergal Friel for Alan Mc Ateer, James Kerr for Eoghan Carr, Brandon Mc Clafferty for Mark Friel.

Aodh Ruadh too strong for ladies on Sunday morning

The ladies suffered defeat this morning in Ballyshannon against an exceptional and extremely efficient Aodh Ruadh team. The sides were tied, two points apiece after eight minutes with Hannah Shiels and Lauren Carr on target. The hosts then upped it a gear and tagged on several points before finding the net in the closing stages of the first half. Marguerite in goals did really well to save a penalty kick but Aodh Ruadh fired home the rebound. Emma Friel and Lauren Carr added points to the Gaels’ tally as the first half reached its conclusion.

A superb individual goal from Lauren Carr was the main talking point of the second half from a Gaeil Fhánada perspective but Aodh Ruadh continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over to run out comfortable winners on the day. Michelle Mc Devitt was the standout Gaels performer, while Méabh Duffy and Emma Friel also put in decent performances.

Next up is a home fixture against Killybegs in a fortnight.

Honours even in U13 clash

Gaeil Fhánada 5:11 Na Dúnaibh 6:08

The u13 boys made the short trip across the bridge on Friday evening and played out a high scoring draw against Na Dúnaibh in Round 2 of the league.

Fanad started off brightly and got a couple of early goals but Downings were never far away and after a couple of wides, they started to find their range and reeled in the Fanad men by half time. Downings deservedly took the lead in the second half but the boys in blue and white didnt give up and showed great resolve to earn a share of the spoils at the end.

Great to have Gavin Mc Ateer and Cormac Dunleavy back on board to strengthen up the squad. Also two relatively new men, who put in stellar performances in both defence and attack, were Johnny Mc Ateer and Eoghan Mc Laughlin.

There was a strong competitive edge to this game in which both teams will have learned a lot.

Team:

Gavin Mc Ateer, Cormac Dunleavy, Conor Friel, Eoghan Mc Laughlin, Johnny Mc Ateer, Evan Mc Daid, Dan Martin, Iosaf Mc Ateer, Christian Gibbons, Conor Callaghan, Harry Blaney, Cillian Gilmour, Oisin Lynch, Ronan Wilson, Jack Dunleavy, Darragh Boyce, Michael Peoples, Kieran Carr, Tiernan Kerr.

Next game is this coming  Wednesday the 23rd against St Eunan’s in O’ Donnell Park at 7.30pm.

Training on Friday in Portsalon at 6.30.
