Stirring final ten minutes secures reserve title for Red Hughs

Red Hughs 1:13

Gaeil Fhánada 2:06

A Red Hughs goal from the penalty spot with eight minutes remaining turned this tie in favour of the men from the Cross, and from that point onwards they weren’t going to let their lead slip with an assured display to the final whistle.

The opening exchanges were littered with mistakes from both teams, but it was the men in the red and black who were first on the scoresheet, with two points in the opening twelve minutes, one from free and one from play. Fanad missed two frees before finally hitting the target on the quarter hour courtesy of Patsy Friel. Brandon Mc Clafferty took over free kick duties to level matters a couple of minutes later. Red Hughs responded with two further points, the first from a free which was brought forward into the scoring zone and the second from play. The Gaels got a big score to sneak ahead approaching the break. Oisín Mc Fadden launched a high ball into the area. Jonny Nanny rose highest, over the keeper to palm the ball towards goal, for Patsy Friel to finish into an empty net. It was all sqaure at the break however, another pointed free on the stroke of half time from Red Hughs.

Gaeil Fhánada began the second half brightly, with Alan Mc Ateer seeing his effort stopped by the Red Hughs keeper from point blank range. The ball was to find the net two minutes later however, as Alan beat a couple of men to feed James Kerr who finished with aplomb to the net. Red Hughs responded with two more points, one from play and the second from a free to close the gap to the minimum before James Kerr converted another free for Bernard’s charges. The next four points were divided evenly, Jonny Friel and Oisín Mc Fadden with two lovely efforts, but each one was followed by a Red Hughs reply. With Gaeil Fhánada two ahead with eight minutes left, the penalty was awarded and buried emphatically to the roof of Shaun Friel’s net. From that point on, Red Hughs were dominant and fired over from play eight the next attack. Patsy Friel did have a half chance but elected to fist over the bar to make it a one point game once more. Red Hughs weren’t to be denied from that point, converting a free and finding the range from play twice. The Gaels did launch a couple of dangerous balls in around the house in the closing moments in search of a goal but the men from the Cross had the answers and ran out four point winners.

The lads will look back on this one with some regret, as they enjoyed a lot of possession during the second half. Red Hughs were more clinical with the opportunities that presented themselves however and were worth their victory over the hour.

As yesterday’s game concluded the adult season within the club, we would like to thank all the players who lined out in the blue and white and the various management teams for their efforts throughout the year. We’ll see you all again in 2020!

Minor girls march on

Gaeil Fhánada 6:12

Na Ceithre Maistrí 1:09

The scoreline does nothing to attempt to describe the nature of yesterday’s minor game in Páirc Uí Shiadhail, where an awesome extra time display from Gaeil Fhánada earned them a place in the final.

The story of the previous eighty minutes is much more complex, as Four Masters who were in control for much of the second half, had to convert a free deep in stoppage time to force extra time.

The pitch, as ever was in immaculate condition in Portsalon, with the morning sunshine adding to near perfect conditions for football. John made several changes from the last game against Convoy, his hand forced due to unavailablity because of injury.

The first half was end to end, but neither side had much luck in front of the posts. Lauren Carr opened the scoring early on, after the Donegal Town girls spurned an earlier opportunity. They responded with their first point in the fourth minute from a placed ball. The next two scores came from the Gaels, Keri Sweeney and Clare Friel both on target from play to open up a two point gap on the quarter hour mark. Both teams were intent on attacking, but handling efforts and good defending kept the scoreline low. Four Masters struck for goal as the half wore on. A long ball over the top caught out the defence, and despite the best efforts of a scrambled defence, the ball was fired high into the roof of the net. Leah Mc Loughlin made a fantastic double save to deny the Donegal Town girls another goal during the first half. The Gaels lost Tori Gallagher just before half time to injury, and was replaced by Marie Kerr.

The second half began brightly for the visiting team, who fired over two quick scores after the break. Clare Friel also found her range in the opening exchanges to reduce the gap to two. Gaeil Fhánada kept battling, but the bounce of the ball wasn't falling their way. Four Masters pounced again with two quick fire points to increase their lead. Eimear Sweeney, who put in a massive performance after being switched to midfield, got forward to strike a point to keep the Gaels in contention. Again, Four Masters replied in the strongest fashion, firing two points in two minutes to move five clear by the twelfth minute. That was to be their final score for twenty four  minutes however, as Gaeil Fhánada slowly dragged themselves back into contention. Muireann Ní Mhathúna entered proceedings for Gráinne Sweeney, while Aoife Gibbons grew into the game, doing a huge amount of good defensive work. In fairness to the Gaels full back line, they stood up to a lot of pressure, with Méabh Duffy, Muireann and Caitlin Heraghty doing all in their power to prevent further scores. Kate Sweeney popped up with a point on 17 minutes to pull Gaeil Fhánada closer, before a Lauren Carr point in the twenty second minute brought it back to a three point game. Dearbhla Mc Devitt was superb throughout, while Michelle Mc Devitt grew into proceedings as the half went on. Chances were hard to come by, and it seemed like the Gaels were going to need a goal. Two minutes later, it duly arrived. Lauren powered through the centre to see her drive crash back of the crossbar. Marie Kerr was first to react, and she fed Clare Friel who moved it into the path of the onrushing Kate Sweeney who powered to the net. All of a sudden, the girls had a renewed energy and with 28 minutes on the clock a superb Lauren Carr point edged Gaeil Fhánada into the lead. The girls battled ferociously from that point, but with several stoppages due to injuries in the second half, there was enough time for Four Masters to find an equalising score from a placed ball to force extra time.

The girls really stepped it up in extra time, although it took a fantastic Leah Mc Loughlin save to ensure Four Masters didn’t get the best possible start. Lauren Carr had the first big say in the half driving through the centre and placing a pin point shot into the bottom corner. Eibhlín Shiels followed that up with a quick point to give the Gaels a four point cushion. Gráinne Sweeney suffered an injury during the first period of extra time, with Jessica Coll being called back into proceedings. Gaeil Fhánada got a real boost in the closing moments, finding the net twice courtesy of Clare Friel and Lauren Carr. Kate Sweeney then notched a point to open up a strong half time lead.

The girls continued where they left off after the break, and were handed a great chance to seal the victory in the third minute. Clare Friel, who rose high to collect a long ball into the sqaure, was pulled to the ground. Eimear Sweeney expertly converted the ball to the corner of the net. A Four Masters point was followed by points from Jessica Coll and Lauren Carr before Kate Sweeney struck for the final goal late on.

Four Masters put in a big display for the first fifty minutes, but great credit is due to our girls who just wouldn’t throw in the towel. Well done to everyone on a great team performance. We hope that the injuries sustained by Tori Gallagher and Gráinne Sweeney aren’t too bad, and hopefully they’ll  be back playing soon. Attention now turns to the final against Red Hughs, who defeated Naomh Pádraig Muff after extra time yesterday. Another big challenge awaits the girls.

Gaoth Dobhair prevail narrowly in u13 final

Gaoth Dobhair 5:05

Gaeil Fhánada 4:05

It wasn’t to be today for the u13 girls in the rain in Dunfanaghy after a brave performance came up just short against Gaoth Dobhair.

Both teams gave it their all during the game, but the girls from the west moved into the lead with about a quarter hour remaining and never looked back from there, defending ferociously and in numbers to ensure their goal wasn’t to be breached.

The Gaels were first on the scoreboard, Leah Mc Loughlin from play with a point in the fifth minute, and she followed it with another four minutes later. Gaoth Dobhair took charge of proceedings from that point and hit the next four scores without reply in a ten minute period. The fired a point in the twelfth minute and followed with a goal, and they repeated the pattern again to move into a six point lead. However, from that point on, Gaeil Fhánada again moved into the ascendancy. Méabh Mc Ateer pounced for a much needed goal on the rebound before a Rachael Friel point with her right foot reduced the gap to two. The Mc Loughlin twins had the final say of the first half, Leah firing home an emphatic goal before a point from Megan gave the Fanad girls a two point lead at the break.

The game continued to ebb and flow after half time, with the Gaoth Dobhair girls quickest out of the blocks. A goal and a point in the first four minutes turned the advantage their way. Leah Mc Loughlin had the next say however, and  replied with a Gaels goal in the next attack. Both defences were on top for the next period, Olivia and Anna Friel along with Natalie Mc Fadden in the full back line doing trojan work, while Lisa Gallagher had a great game in nets. The girls in green and white were also putting in an impressive rearguard action in the difficult conditions at the other end which meant scores were at a premium. Leah completed her hatrick in the fourteenth minute, but then Gaoth Dobhair really stepped it up. The repeated the first half pattern of goal, point, goal, point again, to move into a four point lead. The girls really threw everything they had at at in the final seven or eight minutes, but a couple of fine saves and blocks by the Gaoth Dobhair cúlbaire and back line ensured they weren’t to be denied. Eva Blaney was excellent throughout the second half and launched almost every Gaels attack. Megan Mc Loughlin did fire over to reduce the gap to three, but that was as close as it got towards the end.

Fair play to both teams who gave it their all in trying conditions and congratulations to Gaoth Dobhair on their victory.

Míle buíochas leis an bhainisteoir, Aidan Mc Ateer agus Hannah Ní Shiadhail as a gcuid oibre i rith na bliana. Buíochas leis na himreoirí go léir agus a dtuismitheoirí as a n-iarrachtaí agus a gcuid tacaíochta fosta.
