Aodh Ruadh club notes

November 05, 2019

Ladies

Aodh Ruadh welcomed Cavan champions Killygarry to Ballyshannon for the Ulster club minor ladies quarter-final on a bright autumn Sunday afternoon. It was to prove a hugely entertaining game for the large crowd in Father Tierney Park, with the Breffni kingpins prevailing by the bare minimum. A four goal salvo from the visitors in the first half proved  crucial with the Breffni girls going in leading by 1-5 to 4-3. Aodh Ruadh mounted a gutsy second half comeback though with early goals from Orla Keon and Cáit Gillespie catapulting the Ernesiders right back into the reckoning. In the end though Killygarry held on for a 3-9 to 4-7 victory and will face Errigal Ciaran in the Ulster semi-final. The slow start cost Aodh Ruadh, but they can take great pride in manner they dug deep and outscored Killygarry 3-6 to 1-4 from the 17th minute on. The girls showed massive reserves of grit and character. Like the county semi-final and final, this was a superb team performance from Aodh Ruadh. Bridín Maguire was absolutely outstanding between the posts, while Ana Keon gave a ferocious display at full back. Caitlin McGarrigle played one of the best games of her career, eventually coming out on top in a titanic battle against the exceptionally talented Aisling Walls. Lucy McGlynn also grew to dominate as the game wore on. Caoimhe Hughes O'Brien was a dynamic presence in the centre of the park and gave every last shred for the cause. Up front Orla Keon, Gráinne Maguire, Cáit Gillespie and Aoibhínn McGarrigle all stood up and were counted against probably the best defence Aodh Ruadh came up against this season. However, it was the heart and character shown by every single member of the team in difficult circumstances which will be the enduring memory of this game. Best of luck to Killygarry in the remainder of the Ulster series. They played the game in a great spirit and represented their county with style. Football

A well attended Bord na nÓg AGM took place last Friday in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh. With almost 30 present, reports on the previous year's activity were read and considered with some interesting and engaging discussion on the matters arising. The following appointments were made on the evening. Chairman, David O'Donnell; Secretary, Lisa McTernan; Southern Divisional Board Delegate, Damian Conlon. A presentation was made on the implementation of an academy coaching structure in Bord na nÓg to be headed up by Packie McGrath and Benjy Drummond. This was a well-received proposal and appointment of management teams at the various age grades was deferred to allow time for further communication with coaches and facilitate feedback. Anyone interested in coaching and management positions for the 2020 season are asked to contact either David O'Donnell on 087-7972101 or Lisa McTernan on 086-2338636.

Coaching course

The club is hosting a child protection course on Friday 15th November in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh, and a foundation level coaching course the following day, Saturday 16th November. Any parent or coach helping out in 2020 must complete the child protection, and we encourage all parents and coaches getting involved with a team next year to sign up for the foundation course also. To register or for further information, contact Packie McGrath on 087-9794696.

Any other business should be notified to Lisa by Thursday 28th November.

The Aodh Ruadh Ladies AGM will take place this Saturday at 7pm in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh. Ladies football in the club is in general good health at the minute, and that is thanks to the work of managers, mentors, officers, parents, guardians and, most importantly our brilliant players. We will look back over the efforts of the past year and make plans for 2020. We invite anyone with an interest in the Ladies game in the area to come along on the night.

Congratulations

Well done to David McLoone on his reappointment as County Development Officer for 2020. He has proven himself a great asset to the county in this position and we are proud that he continues a long tradition of service to Donegal GAA in key positions by Aodh Ruadh members.

National and Local Draw

Tickets are currently being distributed for the annual National Club Draw. This is effectively three draws in one with fantastic prizes in all three draws for just €10 a ticket. See aodhruadh.org for full details of the prizes available. Proceeds from this draw are ring fenced to build a new playing surface on Father Tierney Park in 2020. This year marks the 65th anniversary of the opening of the ground. Our Park / Development Committee has already secured €100,000 in grant aid towards the project costs and the draw is a critical part of providing matching funding. Initially, we need as many people as possible taking one or two books of five tickets to sell. Any club member can provide tickets or contact anyone of the Draw Committee of Tom Daly, William Doogan, Conal Gallagher, Gerard Ferguson, Paul Gillespie, David McLoone, Sarah Daly, Philip McLoone and Michael Daly. For those not living locally who wish to support the Father Tierney Park project, tickets can be purchased on the Aodh Ruadh page on Klubfunder.com.

Dinner Dance

The annual club Dinner Dance will take place on Friday, 6th December. This year we will be in the Sandhouse Hotel, Rossnowlagh, proceedings getting under way at 7pm sharp. The meal will be followed our awards presentations with music by The Show Offs bringing down the curtain on the evening's festivities. Tickets, priced €25, are ONLY available online through the Aodh Ruadh page on Klubfunder.com and are strictly limited to 160, with a significant number having already been snapped up. If anyone is having difficulty with the online purchasing, they should give Lisa McTernan a call on 086-2338636. It has been a successful year for the club on a number of levels so please book early to avoid disappointment.
