Would it of been better if there was less league games this year and the play the qualifiers and tailtean cup instead? I always thought championship football in the summer is what the players love but again this year most players will only get one championship game Irishcelt (Wicklow) - Posts: 149 - 09/04/2021 12:32:39 2336583 Link 0 |
Nah. The championship is a foregone conclusion. The league isn't, tbh if the championship was scrapped this year I couldn't have cared less. Particularly with no spectators etc. It's gone boring, and is trying to be hyped up. It just ain't the same at all.

i think the plan is best they could do. League games 4 in football 5 in hurling gives enough to get championship warm and games at your own level. However they should insist on the finals, shared titles a load of rubbish potentially. theborderfox (Monaghan) - Posts: 138 - 09/04/2021 18:15:15 2336632 Link 0 |
The championship last year was boring? Tipp winning Munster and Cavan winning Ulster on the same day with players in tears with emotion after the games...Cork beating Kerry in an unforgettable dramatic ending. Although I hope this year will be the last without fans...it definitely isn't the same, you're right there

Yeah I still found it boring, great for tipp and Cavan obviously and cork. But it was boring, there's a great rivalry between Kildare and Meath since early 90s. Normally I'd be ecstatic if we hammered them like we did last year. Tbh when I look back it won't be even in my top 50 matches. Whereas the league the year before we won by a point in league with it pelting snow frozen in places I didn't know existed. I remember every bit of it. The championship is gone boring, speaking to dubs even the most ardent supporters couldn't be asked anyone, they'll watch and want to win he said but it's just so predictable now, the forward mark is also ridiculous.

They could have used the NFL as 8 qualifier groups of 4, with say top 3 in each to AI KO 24 (group winners to AI KO Rd of 16).

Id say it would be even better if some counties got to finish their club champships from last year.

League way more important than Championship for most teams so I'm happy with how they went. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1517 - 10/04/2021 14:23:03 2336725 Link 0 |
A knock out championship must be difficult for Leinster counties outside of Dublin. At least having a second chance opened up an opportunity for Leinster counties to get a championship round, the best they can hope for is a 20 point defeat in an empty Croke Park. As for the other provinces a knock out championship opens up a great opportunity, close games, local rivalies and a genuine chance for a dozen counties to win a Provincial championship. Yes the All Ireland series might ultimately prove to be boring but there will a lot of great championship days before that in the heat of summer.

At the moment, I'd settle for anything. lionofludesch (Down) - Posts: 475 - 10/04/2021 18:06:08 2336754 Link 1 |
Maybe so, but there's clubs still waiting to play county senior finals. The GAAs insistence on playing the league this season is silly. Should be the same set up for club and county as last year. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 1893 - 10/04/2021 18:37:14 2336764 Link 0 |
The problem I see is intercounty can be played at level 4 or 5..from what I know club training can go back but matches can't be played unless it's at level 3..can some one confirm this? CTGAA10 (Limerick) - Posts: 2177 - 10/04/2021 19:49:34 2336773 Link 0 |
A dozen ?? Don't think so. Leinster like the all ire itself is a foregone conclusion as you said. But for life of me I can't think of a dozen counties with realistic hopes of winning a province , Kerry will Walk munster (they won't make same mistakes as last year) tipp or cork haven't a hope this year. Connacht, hard to look past mayo, Galway will fancy their chances but that's it. Ulster ? Can't see Cavan in summer having the same impact, Donegal will win with Tyrone hoping for a win. So realistically I have 2 in Connacht 2 (at a push ) in ulster one in Leinster and Munster If I was to put on a bet. I'd go Donegal Dublin Kerry And mayo with a possibility of Galway. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 10/04/2021 20:05:18 2336776 Link 0 |
I'd say Dublin to walk leinster again yawn yawn. And like you said Kerry won't make same mistakes this year and walk Munster. Connocht I'd still say has 3 genuine teams that can beat each other on any given day mayo Galway Roscommon. And for Ulster I think donegal and Tyrone are a bit ahead of the rest so its between the 2 of them. So that's 7 I've came up and can't see where anyone can see 12 teams with a realistic chance of winning anything are

There barely a dozen between football and hurling that you could say are in the mix. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 11/04/2021 12:58:02 2336846 Link 1 |
Any one of 5 teams can win Ulster this year. Anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about Ulster football. thegadfly (Cavan) - Posts: 290 - 11/04/2021 14:43:16 2336856 Link 4 |
Why do we have to wait 5 weeks more for the league to start anyway? fellas are fit enough for league football, 2 or 3 weeks of collective training would have been fine I think, use the league to get fit for Championship. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 2705 - 11/04/2021 16:04:32 2336869 Link 1 |
There's actually 9 teams that can win Ulster this year. I think you've just demonstrated you're own assertion of ignorance about Ulster football . Well done boy. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 11/04/2021 17:07:09 2336877 Link 0 |
Bit harsh. There's actually 31 (32 if they let London in) teams that can win the AI Championship, in theory, but some of us are more realistic. lionofludesch (Down) - Posts: 475 - 11/04/2021 17:49:41 2336880 Link 1 |
