Senior Championship 09

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Butterfingers- Valid point, but would you take this into consideration. By exposing players from these bad teams as you call them (I prefer imtermediate and Junior but each to his own, you are obviously from a club that wins a lot) to the senior championship you are giving more players in the county tough games which is needed. Thus improving the standard of football and giving decent players from the lower levels the games they need to improve. So they did't win but in the overall scheme of things it about broading the base of players playing senior championship and helping these players to improve, over time. Your not goin to see results overnight.
Without doubt there are players from these amalgations who are better individually than some players who have been playing senior championship football. Not every one who has been playing senior championship this past 10 years has been county standard have they? but there are players in inter and junior championship who could be and are and with senior champ football will improve more than the guy playin it with his club every year and going nowhere. And if it works in Kerry where you have numbers of Junior players on county team who play in Amalgations, why not here in time.

maybe the fact that they had a stag had something to do with it Jinky, but th efact that redhills were so much better had more to do with it! And if you go out the night before a senior championship game, it's little wonder they never make it in their own!

Think there was only 2 or 3 lads playing who were at the stag

All the Drumgoon lads were out the night before either at the stag or a party. Will probably see a huge improvement from Drumbride the next day.

if some players were out for a stag it shows the same commitment isnt there for this amalgamation that is there for the club

Cant believe drumbride played so bad, i heard they were going well in challenge games but i suppose championship is tottaly different. Redhills looked very good though. Young fit, skillfull team could be a dark horse.

I was at the WCC Belturbet game. I was disappointed with the team selection. We did not see by any means the best of the west in this game. They needed Cassidy and the two Kellegher brothers from Corlough, PP O'Hara (brillant player would love to see him playing senior) from Shannon Gaels and Enda McHugh should have featured because the Corlough Midfielder Fintan McGovern was not great. Templeport corner back McKiernan would have been a far better choice to mark Jason Reilly, was he in the subs? WCC were not up to the same level as Belturbet but would have been there or there abouts if they hadnt lost a man. Brendan Fitzpatrick was excellent. Deserves a chance at county!! Mark Teevan played very well too and Damien Reilly done a superb job marking Ronan Reilly.

Dont think west cavan gaels team selection made that much of a difference, belturbet seem to be goin well this year and im told they have all forwards goin well not jst jayo,i saw them once this year against mullahoran and they seem to have alot more options, redhills were very impressive sunday, good young team.might not be to far off come the business end of things

Ball had a great first half at midfield for WCC.. Went out of it in the second half. I wouldnt say they should have been beaten by more. They missed a penalty and a one on one.. Belturbet the better team though.

Joe Prior would have been exposed at full back too. Best full back in West Cavan under a high ball but wouldnt have the pace.
Eamon Reilly caused trouble when he moved out. Hopefully PP will be there against Redhills.

Well said Wahoo. It'll take WCG or West Cavan Lions a few seasons to get going. Jonsmith your not exactly Mr Current Affairs. One of the Kellegher brothers is injured for rest of season. Mckiernan is also injured. the two guys from Shannon gaels where not fit to play the entire match. It takes time to blend 4 teams together. The lions did'nt even do training just warm up games where they struggled to find enough players due to work, beer, laziness reasons/excuses. There is alot of people eager to see instant sucess in Cavan. Our county team is bad because our club scene is awful. We're taking a step in the right direction. True to form the WCG contain 3 out of four teams who will be finishing bottom of the league bar shannon gaels. Anyone out there have any positive feedback or suggestions. Out of a pick of 70....40 more like. First 10 (usually half missing) plus 4 to 5 best players. And some dont even want the hassle of added football which is their choice. Gotta go, have to select the real lions!

Is there more than two Kellegher brother playing for Corlough as the both featured on Friday evening last against Cornafean?? I did read where one of them got a bad ankle injury but going by what a kildallen man told me at the game he was the one who came on and made an instant impact on the game infact if he had been on sooner he could of turned it around very strong and determined player.

Was at the Belturbet WWG game: Firsly the team selection was all wrong, why was O Hara on the line and Mc Govern at centre field when he was clearly unfit for his club game the Friday evening. I thought WWG gave as good as they got in the first half but needed to be taking all their chances and they didn't. Ronan Reilly was totally out of it and huffed and puffed all through the game, if he had to make the connetion he would of got sraight red out of prue frustration. Need to learn from this.

I think it can work but only if they get the players out , In previous post there is mention about a Cassidy lad from Corlough well Seen Cassidy as a spectator at the game and I believe he is not interested so you have to take that on board too some of the better players just don't want to play. Really want to see PP out the next day I think he will be a good addition , It can't be bad for these clubs to have some of their players playing at a higher level and hopefully some day this canbe successful.

I dont think Geech is Mr Current Affairs Either! The elder Kellegher brother was injured and believed to be out for the season but is back training and playing, just not full games.

PaJoe your right about Reilly he was luck to be on the field after lashing out. He should have been subbed before this anyways, Great player but he wasnt making an impact in the second half at all with the limited supply of ball reaching him.
