Performance Of The Decade! - 3 Like(s)
An exciting and great match, but only in the second half when Mayo started to take the game to the Dubs. I turned over in the first half as I thought the Dubs were cruising to victory. And Paddy Power thought likewise installing Mayo at 28/1 to win the AI at half time. As performances go, I feel the best match between the two teams was the 17 Final. Close all through and Mayo two up with 8 mins to go. For me, the greatest game of football I've seen was Tyrone/Armagh semi of 05. The place was nearly full and the atmosphere was electric. Any day the great Francie Bellew is flat out on the ground, oblivious to the fact that a penalty has been awarded against his side, can't be a bad game.

The GAA And "Northern Ireland" - 2 Like(s)
The GAA always modeled itself as a 32 county organization. It stood to them a few years ago when there was a bit of an uproar about their awarding of a Croke Park food contract to a company from Tyrone. People said it should have been awarded to a company from the Republic but the GAA said "we are a 32 county organization". Northern Ireland not being singled out there!

Come On Engerland.....Peoples' Views??? - 2 Like(s)
It doesn't really bother me if England win or not, but can't understand how people follow the Premier League, week in ,week out, wear the club jersey but are then totally anti England when it comes to International duty. I remember in 03 when England won the RWC, RTE raised the question how come we're all about David Beckham or Michael Owen when they're playing with their clubs but when they put on the English jersey, we don't want to have anything to do with them.

Replying To katser:  "Absolutely delighted now with them results! Great Round 2 draw for us...Galway v Waterford and Clare v Cork Straight away my predictions...Galway and Clare to win."
Just wondering how you knew this draw, when it was only made on Monday, two days later?

NFL Div 2 - 2 Like(s)
Clare football team are a bit of an enigma. They always seem to be able to hold their own in the league against teams of a decent tradition. They are well able to compete in Division 2 and never seem overawed. But they never seem as comfortable in the Championship. Tipp and Limerick are always a match for them and they never seem to bring their league form into meetings with Cork and Kerry.

Open Draw 2022 - 1 Like(s)
Ciaran Whelan mentioned something on the Sunday Game last week about the GAA looking at a league format in the provinces, feeding into the AI series. Could be interesting? In Leinster have 2 groups of 5 & 6 teams, all play each other. Top 2 from each group go into provincial semi finals. All other teams go into Tailtean Cup. In Ulster a group of 5 & 4 teams, top 2 in each into provincial semis and the rest into Tailtean Cup. In Munster and Connacht, same format with a group of 5/6/7 in Connacht depending on London/New York and 6 in Munster. To facilitate all the extra games, maybe the National league could be condensed into the smaller groups like this this year to provide the time to play all the games?

Is there not some consolation for Shane O'Neill and Galway after today's results? Now that they are out, doesn't that rule out a meeting with Kilkenny and therefore, they can share in the League title for 2021? So not a barren cupboard for Shane O'Neill!

Kerry Need A Catcher - 1 Like(s)
Tommy Walsh gave one of the finest exhibitions of fielding for Kerry In the drawn AI minor final in 06. He picked some amount of ball out of the sky at midfield. Maybe football has changed to allow that role for him now?

Dubs V Mayo - 1 Like(s)
Well done to Mayo on a great win. The Dublin hoodoo is ended Of course, the job is only half done. A little matter of Kerry to overcome before Sam Maguire is gained! You will have to come down to earth quickly after this victory. I saw no hope for you at half time and Paddy Power didn't either and he had you at 28/1 to win the AI. An hour later, you are 6/4! Best of luck in the final.

Replying To endgame:  "Eoin Murphy Kilkenny being hailed as the greatest goalkeeper of all time on Hoganstand this morning. Was he not poor for the Cork goal yesterday or is that being harsh. I thought O'Connor's shot from the angle he struck it might have been saved."
It would have been some save if hed kept it out. I remember in 18 v Limerick he was absolutely brilliant too but KK just came up short on that day too. For me, Damien Fitzhenry is the greatest keeper I've seen. But Eoin Murphy isn't far behind at the moment and he still probably has a few years in him

Monaghan To Represent Ulster - 1 Like(s)
I'd agree with you. As far as I'm aware, the Ulster Council have the right to nominate a team to represent the province. Normally, that is the Champion. If they cannot unfortunately, nominate their champion I think the runner up should be put forward as representatives. We could have a Denmark winning the Euro Final in 92 scenario again!

Hard to know about doing away with the handpass as it is a skill in itself. You're right, in recent times it does look more like a throw. A real proper handpass, maybe one of the best ever seen was DJ Carey to Jimmy Coogan who then goaled v Tipp in 02 semi final. Whatever about a handpass to a teammate at least the GAA did away with the handpassed goal many years ago. Defence or goalie had very little opportunity to block those

Intercounty Players Who Had One Or Two Good Seasons And Then Just Disappeared..Both Codes - 1 Like(s)

Replying To oneoff:  "The most obvious one who I don't think has been mentioned has to be Ray Cosgrove. Had a season most could only dream of in 02. What made it all the more remarkable was he just came out of nowhere that season and was gonr again."
He was there in 99 for the Leinster Final loss to Meath, so had been around for a few seasons

Joe Canning Retiring - 1 Like(s)
First time I saw him was in 2006 under the Cusack Stand, putting over frees under pressure as a 17 year old to help Portumna win the AI Club title. I knew he was special at that point. The same year he was brilliant up front for Galway against KK in the U21 AI Semi Final. You'd have thought he was in his final year, but had 3 years left at U21 at that stage. Definitely a player for the big stage. Delighted he got his AI senior medal in 17.

Switched on TG4 by chance and glad I did because Dublin Offaly was a very entertaining game. Offaly full value for their victory. Cormac Egan gave an exhibition of running and attcking play. Definitely caught the eye. John Maughan, were you watching?
