Game postponed. Sensible thing to do given the circumstances. Sligo weren't so fortunate last year.

Well done on promotion. Disappointment for us as I think we probably had enough over the course of the league but threw it away against Clare and Offaly. Best of luck next year.

Disappointed with the result but well done to Meath. Surprised that a lot of Meath supporters here didn't give Sligo a chance beforehand. There was never going to be much in it. Hope ye got a bit of a fright anyway.

Fly Goal Keepers - 2 Like(s)

Replying To anotheralias:  "I have been intrigued by the evolution of goal keepers and the way they now are mostly excellent outfielders. Its fascinating to watch. However I wonder is it a deterrent to teams to push up and making teams more defensive. Okay, teams can and should push up on kick outs , but once a team has won possession in their own defence we often see the attacking team retreat. Why? Because if they push up man on man . they will still be outnumbered by the goalkeeper coming out , so ultimately that numerical disadvantage can turn out to yielding good possession with a free man in the middle of the field. Now if you know there is going to be a free opponent in possession in the middle of the field, then you are much better served to have more players in defensive position rather than in the opponents half chasing a wild goose chase. . I have a secondary issue with goalkeepers coming out the field, and that is with the colour of the jersey. Players are programmed to use colour based peripheral vision and I think that they can sometimes be hoodwinked into ignoring the opposing goalkeeper and sort of filtering him out of the equation in the same manner as they do the referee. And colour clashes can be an issue. In theory now if both keepers roam simultaneously there is a 5 different coloured jerseys involved. Now dont get me wrong , I like the idea of having ball players in goal with the opportunity to roam and teams that have this facility ( Galway not being one of them unfortunately) should not be penalised. But I wonder are there any ideas to improve these problems. One idea I can think of is: a) Give keepers same coloured jersey as team mates b) Bring in a rule that teams must keep at least 1 player inside their own 21 at all times Not a perfect solution , I know, Has any one any other ideas?"
I think if you give the goalies the same jersey as the outfield players, you'd have to change the rule that any defending player could touch the ball on the ground inside the small rectangle. I think the fly goalie makes total sense, We're moving towards Aussie rules.

Dublin v Mayo. Who will win the 2017 All Ireland football final? - 2 Like(s)
Mayo have been immense and it would be great to see them get over the line but unfortunately for them they are playing the best team ever. The Dubs to win by around 10 points.

Sligo scored 4 points in the second half compared with 3 points in the first half, that's positive.

Why isn't it up to officials to manage substitutions? If you tried to start the match with 17 on the field they wouldn't allow you to. If this is true then it's the officials error.

That Comer yellow card wouldn't have been a yellow even in soccer. Terrible decision.

Replying To eoinog:  "MC Entee is doing a very good job. The last time we were in Div 3 I don't think we won a game. We have won 9 out of the last 11 games in the league and we are on an upward trajectory. Isn't it great to be in this position and knowing that we have good players to come on board in the next few years. As it stands we are still a very young team. Dean Rock retired recently with a bagful of medals and I heard him say he was 23/24 before he broke into the Dublin team and they weren't the all conquering team at that time. Once we got rid of the Daddy's on the sideline at underage, success arrived. How many titles did we throw away? What I like about MC Entee is that he doesn't give a flying f..K what people think of his style. I don't always agree with it but you can't argue with what he has done as a player or manager. He doesn't get involved with referees, sideline officials or doesn't make sensational headlines. When Towey got his red card, there was no question of an appeal. You take your punishment. Sligo never had as an experienced manager. Someone mentioned 3 players not involved. Rooney got loads of chances and never nailed a spot, Kyle Cawley I don't think is even playing club football. Haven't seen him with Mary's in a few years and Gaughan chose not to commit. This happens all the time. For the Down game we are on a hiding to nothing as no one is expecting anything."
Looks like we just got a hiding. I wasn't able to make the game or even follow online or on radio due to travel but it looks like we've found our level in division 3. I wasn't expecting to beat Down but I wasn't expecting that comprehensive of a beating either. Best of luck to Down in division 2 next year.

All Ireland Club Final, Kilmacud V Glen (Derry) - 1 Like(s)

Replying To WanPintWin:  "Sure if there's a stop clock, then there's no need for extra minutes to be added. Stop the game and the clock when the substitutions are being made and restart when they're done. A lot of people have been advocating for the clock for a long time. I do think it's needed, but there is one issue with it which I see in the ladies game, which needs resolution. When teams know exactly how much time is left, the winning team can easily run down the last minute. It can also encourage an even greater level of cynicism. The last minute of the Kilkerrin vs Mourneabbey All-Ireland club final from a few years ago was a good example. Kilkerrin were a point down with less than a minute left. They needed to get the ball up the pitch, but Mournabbey fouled them. By the time the last free was taken in midfield the clock had run out. It was one scenario where in the current men's format, the ref would have kept playing as Kilkerrin attacked. It could possibly be resolved by something like an automatic 13m free for fouls of that nature."
Simple solution is to just treat it like in rugby. Game doesn't end until the ball goes out of play. So in the above scenario the fouls allow the team to play on.

Two tier championship - 1 Like(s)
I'd support a 2 tier championship system. Division 1 and 2 in the Sam Maguire championship and divisions 3 and 4 in the other championship. I agree with Brolly that the finals and semi finals should be played on the same days. The gap between the best teams and the weakest teams is getting wider and 2 competitive championships would make for good watching. Basing them on the league will also make the league more competitive.
