Davy Fitzgerald has parted ways with the Antrim senior hurling squad following the Saffrons’ Joe McDonagh Cup victory over Carlow this afternoon.
BBC Sport NI reports that Fitzgerald informed the players of his decision to step down after the team’s 3-26 to 1-15 win at Corrigan Park, with Laois’s win over London this afternoon ensuring the O'Moore men place in the Joe McDonagh Cup final and the Glensmen’s exit.
The Clare man succeeded Darren Gleeson as Antrim boss in 2024 on a two-year term with the option of a third.
His first season in charge saw the Saffrons winning two games to stay up in Division 1B of the Allianz League, but they’d be relegated from the Leinster championship after five defeats.
This year would see them surviving in the second tier of the league again, but three wins from their last three outings in the Joe McDonagh Cup wouldn’t be enough to see them secure a final place as Laois and Carlow now advance to the decider at Croke Park on June 6th.
Last month saw Antrim GAA dismissing claims that they sought to remove Fitzgerald as the county’s hurling manager, with concerns having been raised by the players in the squad.
It’s being reported that the 2013 All-Ireland winning boss cited a breakdown of trust with some members of the county board as the reason behind his departure today.
