GAA Before The Noughties Was Terrible - 5 Like(s)
I pity today's youngsters who never saw real Gaelic football. Shame too that no real films are available to show how great the game was in the fifties when I started out. The goalie minded the goals and the fullback never left the square. There was no need for coaching. Either you could play or you couldn't.

Will you guys apply the same criticism to the crowd trading as 'GAA fans for choice'?

Fine Utah. But why have you and so many of your contemporaries no interest in religion? That mindset is part of the problem. You may desire to hold onto the finite freedom which secularity offers but to express no interest at all in the infinite freedom which religion presents??.The origin and ultimate meaning of life, why are we here, is life just a meaningless process without meaning or purpose? Why do these great philosophical questions not interest people with your obvious ability? I am not here talking about the{in some ways} fake religion of the de Valera times but the religion of some of the greatest intellects the world has known.

Replying To Suas Sios:  "Worple, how can you say religion presents "infinite freedom"? Christians believe we are all born with original sin. Every child is in debt to god from the moment they are born, heading straight for hell unless they accept jesus. Muslims believe in complete submission to allah or face eternity in hell. Their scripture is supposed to be perfect and unaltered and cannot be questioned. This isn't freedom, far from it. A secular society allows the individual to examine the claims and whatever evidence presented before drawing their own conclusions."
Suas. The assertion that a baby can be born with personal sin is obviously absurd. Finite/Infinite Freedom .As this is a sports forum we can't go into deep theological discussion. FINITE..has to do with voluntarism. The great mantra of our time is" I'm in charge.I will decide what's right and wrong. You don't tell me anything. There is no objective morality.'' This only leaves the quest for wealth, pleasure, power and honour which, taken to extremes, leads not to real freedom but to addiction. INFINITE ..Has to do with submission to God. If Micheal Martin or Michael D.asked me to submit to them I'd tell them where to go. But God....that's different. In short it is the acceptance of the invitation from God to collaborate with Him in perfecting this imperfect world.....Now that's an offer we can't refuse!!

Replying To The_analyser:  "Yes enjoyable final as i have watched many poor or average county finals over the years. As i said already three well worked and taken goals and number of top points scored from play. Not sure what you found disgraceful, are you one of these followers of the game that is easily offended? neverright, the feeling in the crowd was unnecessary handbag stuff towards the end of the game, i'll have to watch back on the sending offs before giving my view if they were correct or not."
The Gaels gave a masterclass in relentless passing ,in and out, back and forward, going nowhere. How the penny hasn't dropped that this cannot work is baffling. And if you find that stuff entertaining ....then...you're easily pleased

As a parting shot to this Tradition thread I would like to point out that even now in pagan(?) England every cup final at Wembley begins with a hymn. If they tried that in Croke Park our spot-on whizzo generation would be livid with rage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fg3gCw5mm7c

I wish people who talk about "greatest of all time " would be more specific about the time frame they refer to.Are they talking about the period 1884-2019 or 1920-2019 .....or what?

Replying To The_analyser:  "Sad news coming in this evening. Liam Gilmartin, last surviving member of the double senior All-Ireland winning Roscommon team of 1943/44 has died. Great footballer and pure gentleman RIP."
Very sad.RIP.Probably our greatest ever midfielder.Never played on a losing championship team at minor junior or senior. His illness in 1945 cost us another All-Ireland.

I've come across a fascinating new book for schoolchildren 7-11. It's called "Brilliant! 25 Catholic Scientists,Mathematicians and Supersmart People" by David and Jaclyn Warren. Illustrations and biographies of Pasteur,Mendel,Copernicus,Braille ,Hildegard etc. It could help to know that faith and science are entirely compatible. Norma Foley should get it into every primary school in Ireland.

I was greatly saddened to hear of his death.I am old enough to have seen him playing although the memory is vague. I would rate him the classic Mayo player since the war. His style, elegance won the admiration of friend and foe alike.I dislike the nickname "flying doctor" because he was so much more than that.May Heaven be his bed.

We have become such a weak nation, bending before every wind that blows. Even in 'pagan' England every cup final begins with a christian hymn. They put us to shame.

What's all this talk about "standard" and "quality of play"? A game is a game. One team wins ultimately and the other loses.Do they have to take the field to please the customers and Sunday Game critics?
