The Corona Virus And Possible Effects To GAA Matches - 6 Like(s)

Replying To wishfulthinkin:  "You'd wonder why the guards felt tge need to move them on if no regulations were breached...maybe it was more to do with roscommon classifying themselves as elite ;)"
A complaint made by a busybody and the guards had no choice but respond to the complaint, a horrendous waste of their time. One of the worst aspects of this pandemic are the frequent outbursts of outrage at the most banal of basic activities. As well articulated by Sourmilk above , ' Elite ' is a classification that applies to all inter county teams. A total non story.

What's Going On In Roscommon? - 4 Like(s)
Long oul process but we got a good 'un in the end. Anthony is a long time resident in the county , has been very active in his local St Brigids club right through the age groups and really knows the club scene in the county very well. One of the more unique managers in the country in that he can flit seemlessly between football and hurling. All in all a very popular appointment.

NFL Division 2 - 4 Like(s)
Very proud to top this division and get back up to Div 1 but even prouder of the manner in which the team and management adopted to the blow of having 14 panel members suddenly unavailable but no whinging, took it on the chin ,fulfilled the fixture and brought home a cup to boot.

What Is Wrong With Limerick - 4 Like(s)
Maybe it will come in the next 2 episodes but would love to hear the voices of the hurling communities in places like Ballyduff ( Kerry), Tooreen ( Mayo), Four Roads ( Ros) , any of the clubs in the Ards penisula in Down. These are islands of hurling fanaticism full of natural hurlers and there are many more clubs /areas like them but there is a bit of a thing in hurling that unless you are from the traditional hurling areas , you cant really know about the game and your opinion is not worthy.

Mayo vs Roscommon - 3 Like(s)
Too sick to go near Hoganstand until now but have to come on and complement a brilliant on and off field performance from Mayo last Sunday. Pundits with their typical herd mentality tripped over themselves after drawn match to say neither team would win an All Ireland before even talking about the game itself. That position had to be revised again after last Sunday and Mayo will be extremely competitive from here on in. The very best of luck to Mayo , they dont get half enough credit for what they have achieved over the last 5 years.

Connacht final 2016 - 3 Like(s)
Brilliant display by Galway today and a reward for going for it. They will improve further from here and definitely a team to watch with the most straightforward route to AI semi-final. In sharp contrast, we persisted with the tactics where we left off in Salthill playing a game we dont know how to play and didnt play all year until the drawn game in Salthill. The tactics clearly failed in their primary function which is to keep the game tight and leave yourself with a sporting chance to get your nose in front in last 10 mins. We were a beaten docket after 15 mins. If this game forces us to abandon the defensive , possession game it will have served some purpose. Very best of luck to Galway. We go back to drawing board and must use whats left of championship to continue to blood the younger players.

Galway vs Mayo Hard Battle - 3 Like(s)
Two really entertaining Connacht Semi Finals and a genuinely open 50:50 contest in prospect in the final. So many variables , Div 1 vs Div 2, Ros brutal record when favourites , Galway momentum from that win tonight, Ros momentum from Sligo 2nd half performance. Couldnt call it but really looking forward to it. Thought ref kept Mayo in game with a succession of very handy scorable frees. Brilliant display from Paul Conroy and a team reward for guts and bravery. Suspect Mayo will pick themselves up and be very tough opposition in the qualifiers. Overall good night for football in Connacht and sport in general. There is no such thing as a good thing and thats why we love it.

Roscommon Vs Monaghan - 3 Like(s)

Replying To shaggylegend:  "Congrats to Roscommon today but the antics of certain players left a lot to be desired. Throwing dirty digs and then the theatrical stuff to get a player sent off exactly like last week against Mayo. Also two head injuries in the period of the black cards meant the play was stopped for 6 minutes out of the ten, meaning Monaghan got no advantage. Roscommon were too nice but this no nasty edge could see them maintain there status. Monaghan were shite. The best team won. Roscommon and Mayo look to have loads of Extra work done during the off season."
sorry Shaggy but have to pull you up on the red card for young O'Hanlon. He connected with a beautiful hook that would have done Barry McGuigan proud and had to go. Would agreewith you though , we have lost the nice guy touch and Anthony Cunningham has put a hard edge into the Roscommon team. As supporters we are delighted with that, its a common trait in all of the top teams these days and thats whats needed to get there, like it or not.

Super win and performance from Sligo and heartiest congratulations and please God , they go all the way now - they have the capability. No complaints from us Rossies, we had great hopes after beating Mayo and Galway but were blown away by Sligo. This is no flash in the pan as Sligo under age has been very competitive for last 5 years due to the work that is being put in at those grades. Their immediate goal is to displace us as no. 3 in Connacht and that can only be good for Connacht football and make it more competitive than it is. Connacht titles at all levels are well earned these days.

Limerick Hurling thread 2023 - 3 Like(s)
The second half display from Limerick was like the ' 5 minute ' All Ireland in 1994 except it went on for a full 35 mins. The most comprehensive half of hurling that I can remember and thrilling to watch. I really hope this Limerick team go on to win 5 in a row and become the undisputed GTOAT but they are all ready that in my mind. Well done Limerick.

David Gough To Referee The Final - 3 Like(s)
David Gough was totally compromised in this game and it showed both ways at different times. Huge non calls for clear kerry frees in the last mins of injury time giving Dublin the turnovers they needed when they were on the rack.

Another Ref Pushed - 2 Like(s)
was a bit shocked by this incident , was in a different league to Diarmuid Connolly / Kevin McStay. It was clear the lad was losing it before pushing the ref in a very aggressive manner and went back for a second equally aggressive go when the ref gave him a red card.

Unique GAA Club Names - 2 Like(s)
Perfect 10, its a short story. Original name for Four Roads was Tisrara ( Teach Sraithre - Straddle House , it was stopping point for pilgrims on way to Clonmacnoise and village where thye hung up their straddles and overnighted ). The village itself is a four way cross roads and a Priest some 130 years or so ago started to call the place Four Roads and had his way and it has stuck ever since. Shame really , the old Irish name much nicer. A very passionate oasis of hurling in a football mad county .

Benefits top 4 teams enjoy - 2 Like(s)
It costs 750k to 1M per year to prepare a senior team where they have a chance of being competitive to the level of the current Top 4 and that has to be recurring over a sustained period. The GAA desperately needs a substantial number of counties to be delusional enough to chase this as they will not get away too many more times with the combined audience of 187,000 that attended this years 5 Q-finals ( and i know, i know there wont be q finals next year ). It is going to be harder and harder sell the dream to the people who have to turn around and try to raise the money to put the required funding in place. A good number of counties have already given up , the rest of us are probably delusional but for how long more ?

Kilkenny V Waterford - 2 Like(s)
13 points from frees for TJ and i am sure Waterford planned to minimise scoring opportunities from frees for TJ but what do you do when you have a ref like that. One of the best halves of hurling played by any team that I can recall. Incredibly skillful teams out there at the moment, a golden era.

Replying To Galwayjoe86:  "Hard to see it tbh Im sure like yourself i know of some rural clubs that have to amalgamate at under age levels just to make up the numbers and field teams and they don't last very long and face a lot of criticism from lots within the clubs and can imagine it would be worse at county level ,would be hard see mayo/Roscommon joining up together"
Wouldnt see link up as impossible GJ86. Relationship in hurling communities would be different. Always a good relationship between likes of Toureen in Mayo and Four Roads/Athleague in Roscommon. All share the same passion and struggle being hurling clubs only in a football forest. I wouldnt have a major problem with an amalgamation and would be interesting to see if it could compete at Joe McDonagh level. There has been quite a shift in last 10 - 15 years where Mayo have taken over the No.2 position in Connacht hurling from us. In 83/84 , we beat Waterford, Dublin and Wexford and were in the shake up for promotion to Div 1 in the second half of the last game in the league round. Those days are a long way off now.

Integrity of game negotiable it would seem. Todays dead rubber game called off due to weather and will now be rolled into the final . Common sense has prevailed.

Can the GAA survive the Rugby onslaught - 2 Like(s)

Replying To moc.dna:  "Big piece on the Indo on Connacht Rugby & it's benefits to the city. Fantastic PR work been done by Connacht Rugby who are also hoovering up huge sums in sponsorship. The atmosphere & hospitality & food & drink available outside the Sportsground & inside it despite a poor ground is exceptional. The promotion of their games is exceptional as well & especially their interaction with schools. The schools scene is something I am very aware of & as someone of my colleagues put it recently, the kids love to see the rugby coaches coming boys & girls & all take part. The Gaa version has kids not wanting to do it, people being late, badly structured & the difference is kids don't look forward to it, it is an inferior product badly delivered. But then when you have coaching officers involved with county & college teams how could it be any better. Croke Park need to get people who will do the job. The football county final in Galway only attracted over 4000 people this despite that one of the finalists were playing the final in their own parish which is the biggest in Galway with over 23000 people. There was very little PR about the final or trying to attract people to watch it. It's not the fault of the two clubs involved they should be assisted by their football board/county board on promoting this. Another difference in the professionalism is where Connacht Rugby did up the Sportsground, put in floodlighting, new stand, hall & gym, dressing rooms & meeting rooms, got the planning permission & even funding from Galway City Council, contrast that with Galway GAA's shambolic attempts, yes attempts, it's been going on for years & if you goggle it you will see even the planning process & some of the mishandling, that the lights never went ahead. Ally this with chaotic it non existent traffic management plans & you see the difference. The vast majority of sponsorship in the city, including supporters is towards rugby, this the biggest urban base in the West of Ireland. Not only that but the growing number of supporters & players drifting to it from Gaa is also growing. I don't see things changing in particular at local level where politics in Gaa is rife."
Agree moc.dna as an occasional visitor to the Sportsground and a regular attendee at all sorts of GAA matches around the province where the games are generally great but the presentation is brutal , dull and unimaginative in the extreme. The professional ( as in paid, pensionable and unsackable ) wing of Connacht GAA is based out of Ballyhaunis and a less professional setup is beyond description. From first hand experience at our own club where on game day the Connacht Council forces us to put up 6 * 4 sheets of chipboard to block up dressing room doors which exit out to the hall and on to our club bar lest the corrupting influence of the devils milk cross the lips of players and supporters. We are not allowed open the bar until games are over. You can check with any official of St Brigids club and validate that this nonsense actually goes on.

Pearse Stadium - 2 Like(s)
Price of land so valuable in Salthill that you could still fund a change to Tuam. Tuam is the ideal location for football which is the dominant sport in Connacht and with recent addition of the M17, Tuam is now in very easy reach of all the Galway hurling heartlands . I wouldnt have any complaints if all Connacht finals were played in Tuam if the stadium was brought up to standard ( a part of me would still miss the hayshed stand which is a time warp and brings me right back to my first games attended in the early 70's, that and ford escort vans and the last of the choc ices )

Thought Hurson did no favours for Monaghan. A pile of soft scorable frees for Dublin, missed frees against Monaghan which Dublin scored from and Con Callaghan could take as many steps as he liked ( with one exception). Dublin Sean.
