Even retirement can't stop Andy Moran!

Andy Moran on duty for Mayo

Despite having retired from club football almost three years ago, former Mayo attacker Andy Moran was up to his old tricks for Ballaghaderreen yesterday afternoon.

Donning the No.19 jersey, the 2025 Monaghan senior football coach slotted a couple of trademark points as his side edged past Aghamore in the Mayo senior football league Division Two final at McHale Park, 2-15 to 0-20.

While Ballaghaderreen captain Luke O'Grady struck for the winning point four minutes into added time and Kuba Callaghan netted a brace of crucial first-half goals, it was the quick two-point salvo from 44th-minute sub Moran that had most tongues wagging after the final whistle.

One of Mayo’s all-time great attackers, Moran announced his retirement from club football in October, 2022, having called time on his illustrious intercounty career in 2019 after 15 years’ service.

Having spent three years managing Leitrim up until last summer, former Footballer of the Year Moran worked alongside new Monaghan boss Gabriel Bannigan as Farney County forwards coach this year and is one of the leading candidates to succeed Kevin McStay as the next Mayo manager.
