Move Galway Vs Mayo To Tuam Stadium - 2 Like(s)

Replying To Mailman98:  "Move all Galway football matches to Tuam. Atmosphere, playing conditions, weather etc. Every man that ever put on the maroon jersey to play football for Galway feels a foot taller in Tuam. Pearse stadium is a soul destroying place for players and especially for supporters."
I agree re Tuam, and imo Pearse Stadium does the hurlers no favours either, it never feels to me that we get a major home advantage from playing their like other teams do. It never feels like a fortress.

Replying To Kickitout:  "Conroy definitely not a full forward we have best full forward in Ireland in Shane Walsh so that's where u play him it's a no brainier ,,"
Disagree, Shane needs space to use his pace, can kick points from distance, not many can do that.

Replying To Really:  "Imo, S.Kelly at full back is costing us in big games. Getting forward is fine, but his primary role should be negating the threat in front of goal, including high ball into the area. Got caught out v Kerry last year v Clifford - repeating the same mistake again this year... So, who would be best equipped for the role? One thing is for sure, unless we try other player/s in the position we will not know. I felt Eoghan Kelly might be better equipped.. The versatile Johnny Heaney might also be worth trying. I don't think Mulkerrin will be the long-term solution - as he lacked pace. I rem. u-20 game v Dublin, when young Archer creamed him.. also, forgettable outings v Kerry.. Unfortunately, IC level exposes and magnifies marginal weaknesses.."
Pity we didn't get to try Eoghan there during the league, a more natural defender.

Starting 15 For Championship (Hurling) - 2 Like(s)
Harsh to blame mgt, probably the 1st year in a while that Joe was fully fit and he clearly wanted to play and it was a semi-final. I didn't see the point in playing him in some of the earlier games but so be it, just unfortunate. Should be back for the All Ireland series, hopefully we'll be involved, everyone else will have to raise their game.

That's where he belongs, sub. Game opens up a bit, he's very dangerous, seldom does it as a starter. Good last weekend but bear in mind who we were playing.

Replying To tommy k:  "On a more positive note Martin McManus was Galway's MOTM with 1-3 and did very well in his first competitive start outside of the Walsh Cup. Kevin Cooney did well in parts but needs to be stronger and more controlled when in possession. Liam Collins is very talented and with a bit more S&C to break tackles etc will be very effective going forward."
Caught some ball, used it well, assisted Cooney's goal and also nearly played him in for another. Early days but a great debut.

It's gone a bit mad for sure. Shane Cooney does deserve another chance, I thought he did ok, still think we will end up with Daithi at 3 and Gmac at 6, I don't think P Mannion is strong enough for 6. Playing GMac at 3 for now is a good idea imo and he hasn't done too bad there either. Conor Cooney looked better than I'd seen him in a Galway jersey for a long time, his best position is full forward though. I think we'll need Whelan at 11, we need ball winners and they seem to be in short supply. Joe at 14 would yield more goals and I'd like to see us try that, but no point having him in there if we don't get the ball into him, he's probably better where he is at the moment.

Replying To ahsure.:  "Let there not be another bad word said about Matty Tierney, plucking them out of the sky. Some of ye here would have him dropped."
I think the only criticism of him could be he doesn't do it often enough, for such a big man. When did we last see him do that. He was super today, more next week please. Can someone explain how we have a keeper that can kick a ball 50plus yards against a strong wind and we spend most of our time trying to get short ones away which we are crap at, it's very annoying.

Replying To Viking66:  "I thought he did OK tbh. In the 1st half apart from Whelan and your fullback line he was one of very few lads who looked effective. When Foley Mogie and Dwyer tired and then went off and were replaced by lads who were 19 and 20 you took over the middle 3rd. Concannon made a big difference also with his energy. I suppose while we were well on top for the entire 1st half we have to bear in mind who we were playing!!!!!"
Apologies, wasn't having a swipe at Wexford hurling, more the inexperienced team ye had out.

Replying To Kinvara:  "As it stands, If I were to pick the team for Championship tomorrow it would be 1: Darach Fahy 2: Morrissey 3: Daithi Burke 4: Grealish 5: Mannion 6: Shane Cooney 7: Cianan Fahy 8: Sean Linnane 9: David Burke 10: Cathal Mannion 11: Conor Cooney 12: Joseph Cooney 13: Brian Concannon 14: Conor Whelan 15: Evan Niland Bit of a more experienced side to start, but you'd have good game winners off the bench too chomping at the bit to come in, the likes of Flynn, Tom Mon, Gavin Lee etc I would expect Tiernan Killeen to make a real push for a halfback spot and Shane Cooney would probably be on thin ice. You'd have good depth there in the fullback line with TJ, Fintan Burke, Gearoid Mac pushing as options I have linnane in there because you'd be dropping Mannion into the middle third. It would free up Mannion and Davey Burke to do what they do best - get on the ball and find the forwards. Linnane would do the dog work and Mannion can push up then whenever needed. Glennon, Lee and Monaghan would be pushing for a game here and one of them would probably be replacing Burke at 50 mins Cooneys in the half forward line give it a bit of size and Niland would be operating around there too. If they need to go 3 in at full forward at any stage then Conor Cooney is a good option with young lads as options"
That's a strong forward line with Lee and Collins as back up. Shane Cooney seems to struggle when he pulls on a Galway Jersey.

Replying To FallenStar:  "Very easily forgotten across the last 5 years but the man was phenomenal in midfield. No doubt about it that if he was fully fit in 2000 that we would have beaten Kerry."
Agree. A legend for sure, was super when he came on in the 2000 final, dragged us back into it. Such a pity his rep has got damaged by his managerial career, also bear in mind that was the game was being played by almost every team.

Replying To Pope_Benedict:  "Galway were a much better side in 2001 than 1998, imo. That '98 team was very young, and very inexperienced, with up to half the team in their first or second year. The 2001 win showed the potential that they had in 1998, because they really had no business winning the all-ireland in 1998, as you say, but that didn't stop them for some reason."
Exactly, they were just starting out, they improved big time over the next few years. Thought Tomas Mannion looked class, Divilly also looked good.

Crazy having a ref from one of our main rivals, hard to see him as neutral, interesting to see how it works out.

Replying To galway19:  "Morrissey will start there and then your other five are Daithi, Cianan, Fintan, Shane Cooney and Brennan. Padraic Mannion probably will have to go to midfield. That would leave out Grealish, Morgan, Dan Loftus, McInerney but there is just a lot of competition in that back six. Will get a good look at it in the Limerick league game with the Thomas' lads back in at that stage."
Be surprised if Grealish loses his place. I'm not sur Padraig going to midfield will work, leave him where he's comfortable.

Replying To anotheralias:  "I wouldnt be an expert on hurling but as a Galway supporter I was probably in the minority when i say that i didn't switch to the rugby until the hurling was over. This may be a personal observation but there is something about Galway hurling and I wonder if hurling people ( and as I've said I'm not one) would agree with me. In terms of pace , power, shooting, stickwork Galway are on par with anyone ( the exception obviously being Limerick's power). But the area that I think we are well behind is ball handling. Too many times I see Galway players fumbling ball , failing to catch simple 30 yard passes, really bad on catching long high balls. Maybe its just me but I would be very surprised if there was a "fumble / mis-catch stat" that we would be miles behind the Kilkenny's of this world in that regard. If I'm correct what's the root cause. Do we not do enough work against the ball walls or pucking the ball long to each other in the fields. If i'm talking rubbish I won't be offended if ye tell me to stick to the football commentary."
Agree with this, vert poor stick passing. Has happened so many times during the league, even simple ones when not under pressure don't go to hand, are fumbled or overtime. It's very poor. I think other Counties have been at it for years while we were still going long and expecting a forward to win his share of the ball, worked fine in 17 when we had huge men, we don't now, if anything other teams are ahead of us in that as well. Really need to improve this, Limerick streets ahead of us.

I think both Mannions are pretty handy like that as is Niland, he's very quick to get the ball into hand.

Might be a year too early for Clarinbridge but they are definitely the coming team, very young side but have a nice mix of big lads and good hurlers and a nice style of play. Niland was excellent at the weekend but they have loads of options. Ardrahan battled bravely but they were never going to win, lack a bit of quality all around the pitch.

What is it with us and penalties, do they not practice them, lash the fucking thing into the roof of the net this time of year. Didn't make one bit of difference, we were well beaten.
