“We have a great game. We have a great game, and it's important we mind it. In hurling you can blow for a free every minute or two, but it's important to be sensible. I'm not going to give out right now because there's no point but I love the game of hurling we have, we need to be careful.”

Davy Fitzgerald has called for a common sense approach to refereeing in hurling.

“Ninety-two frees in the best two surfaces in the country - Croke Park and Páirc Uí Chaoimh between 50 and 42. Do we want that? People are saying the rules have to be applied the very same as in football. It’s not the same game as football, it’s a different game.”

Two-time Clare All-Ireland winning captain Anthony Daly shares his former team-mate’s concerns.

“Yeah look, two minutes into injury-time - to concede a goal at that stage was disappointing.”

Defeat was a bitter pill for Mattie Kenny and the Dubs to swallow.

“When the Waterford people look out at a hard-working Waterford team, I don’t think they’ll have too many complaints and that’s what they were looking for and they’re enjoying it. Please God we’ll continue to do that.”

Waterford supporters will be happy with what they are seeing from Liam Cahill’s charges.

“The main thing is to win but we’re at a pitch where we’re trying to create as competitive a squad as we can, and we’re using the league for that. It’s all about the championship.”

Shane O’Neill and Galway are looking at the bigger picture.

"Richie English unfortunately has picked up a cruciate knee ligament injury so his involvement this season is unfortunately come to an end.”

The loss of the All-Star defender is a big blow for John Kiely and the Treaty County.

“We stood back and admired Limerick in the first half and found ourselves six, seven points down, and you cannot do that against a top team like Limerick. But we turned things around and went from seven points down to three points up, and that was pleasing.”

It was a game of two halves as far as Cork boss Kieran Kingston was concerned.

“I was never involved with him at underage. But I never realised how good he was until I saw him up close. He is a good player, a really good player. And he showed it there.”

Clare manager Brian Lohan singled out Shane O’Donnell for special praise following their draw with the Cats.

“It was great to get Noel onto the pitch. We had the spare man and played him as the spare man and he got on a nice bit of ball. His touch is as good as ever. For Seamie, he hasn't got much game time up to now but to get a full 70 minutes and finish with 1-1 at the end was nice too.”

Liam Sheedy was happy to see Noel McGrath and Seamus Callanan in action against Westmeath.

“It is a tough one to take, to come down here and underperform the way we did.”

The Lake County didn’t do themselves justice in their display against Tipp, according to Sheedy’s counterpart Shane O’Brien.

“You’d be disappointed (because) for me there’s no way that match should have gone ahead. That pitch was in awful condition and I suppose I’d be somewhat apologetic to Carlow that we ended up playing the match like that.”

The O’Moore Park pitch made life difficult for both sets of players and Eddie Brennan said the game shouldn’t have went ahead.
