Tough-as-nails defender James Loughrey has called time on his inter-county football career after representing both his native Antrim and his adopted Cork with distinction.

The 34-year-old made his senior debut with Antrim in 2007, before work commitments as an accountant brought him to Cork.

He had transferred from St Brigid's in Belfast to Mallow in 2013 and was called up to the Rebels' squad at the start of that year by then manager Conor Counihan.

'Locky' soon became a permanent fixture in the Cork full-back line, but injuries hampered his involvement in recent seasons.

Cork GAA acknowledged Loughrey's immense contribution to the county in a post on social media this evening

“Best wishes to James Loughrey on his retirement from Inter-County football,” Cork GAA said

“James has made an immense contribution to the Cork football team and we wish him and his family all the best for the future.”
