Mayo GAA has announced a new partnership with Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) that will see students from their Sports Science degree program working with Mayo GAA teams.

The Sports Science Student Placement will run over a 3-year period commencing January 2022 and will see final year Sports Science students from the GMIT will gain valuable sports performance experience with Mayo GAA teams in various age groups and disciplines.

Mayo GAA chairperson Liam Moffatt said he was delighted that the County Board had supported and secured this opportunity to work with the GMIT as GAA teams would now have access to further Sports Science proficiencies in tandem with the professional backroom staff who support their teams.

“MIT Science program will afford students the opportunity to put theory into practice in a well-structured program that benefits both parties.

“The students will gain a unique insight into team preparation, strength and conditioning, nutrition, performance analysis, injury and recovery and sports psychology while working with Mayo GAA teams,” commented Moffatt.

Mayo GAA have agreed with GMIT that three final year students will be offered the placement with seven key learning outcomes to be achieved during the program.

The purpose of the placement with Mayo GAA is to equip the students with the knowledge, skills and competence to apply contemporary Sports Science principles and practices in real life coaching and team development in order to enhance performance.
