Last evening’s Offaly SFC encounter between Shamrocks and Ferbane in Tubber was stopped for almost an hour after last year’s All-Ireland U20 winning captain Kieran Dolan suffered a serious leg injury.

There were distressing scenes as the Shamrocks full back was treated on the pitch after he landed awkwardly after contesting a ball with opponent Kieran McManus in the 22nd minute. Ferbane centre forward Shane Nally was one of the first to come to Dolan’s aid and assisted team medics before a car ambulance arrived after a 25-minute wait. At this point, the players from both teams were asked to form a human shield around the stricken Dolan, who was clearly in great discomfort.

The 21-year-old county senior was eventually stretchered from the field and received a warm round of applause as he was brought to the dressing-room where he received further treatment. An ambulance arrived a short time later and he was subsequently removed to hospital where he was due to undergo surgery.

Dolan also suffered a neck injury last year which forced him to miss most of Offaly’s triumphant U20 campaign.

Ferbane went on to win the Group 1 last round tie by 3-14 to 3-11, but both teams still qualified for quarter-finals against Clara and Edenderry respectively.
