Michael McShane has been appointed as Tyrone’s new senior hurling manager on a three-year term.

McShane steered Slaughtneil to an eighth successive Derry SHC title last September and also guided the club to three of the last four Ulster club crowns.

The Ballycastle native succeeds Mattie Lennon as Tyrone boss, with the latter’s last game in charge being a Nicky Rackard Cup semi-final defeat at the hands of Donegal this past November.

Tyrone county board came under fire recently from Red Hands forward Damian Cassidy over the length of time it had been taking to appoint Lennon’s successor.

The board pointed to the Covid-19 pandemic as having contributed to the delay and last night it handed McShane a three-year term as a new era gets set to begin for hurling in the county.

"We are very pleased to have one of Ulster's top hurling managers taking over the reins of our Tyrone senior hurlers and we all wish him well," said board chairman Michael Kerr.
