Meath v Carlow 3 Jan 2018 - 3 Like(s)
God lads I thought Meath did a fair bit of 15 behind the ball themselves. Anyway. Most teams play like that in waves. The great dubs even. The conditions at this time of year really don't lend themselves to playing that type of transition game. But I'd say Carlow will be happy. They had about 7/8 newcomers. Meath had the little bit of experience at the end to get them over the line. Shouldn't have an issue with Wicklow Sunday I wouldn't imagine. It might be a bit more open and yee can see some nice scores ;) anyway good luck for the year

Replying To dead_as_dodos:  "Not saying he is brilliant but he can take a score. The 2 there at the moment are no threat to scoreboard whatsoever. It's Leitrim for god's sake not the Dubs. Take a chance and quit this mindbendingly boring system for one game anyway,"
Take a chance ? In knockout football ? Win by hook or crook. I prefer watching them win boring rather than losing by ten and just playing recklessly for the sake of it. First time in years we have won a few games. More of the same please !!

Delighted for the minors. They probably played better against kildare the first day but they just took their chances when they came yesterday. Fantastic to see the effort thats been put into the colts in recent years start to benefit a little. Being competitive is key and they have been so far. The free at the end was top class. A great day for these laDS TO GIVE THEM A TASTE OF WINNING IN A carlow jersey. It will be a massive day on may 21st

Replying To No1realist:  "Good win, no doubt, but ............. .......Some dreadful missed chances ......the passing of the ball was diabolical - across the pitch .... then ending in a bunch in the middle of the pitch ...then blocked up. Do Dublin go forward or across the pitch? Can we ever learn that the wings are open spaces - if we want to open up play? ....... We will never score if we keep passing the ball backwards in our own half. ........We were playing against 14 players for most of the second half - would you realise that, if you had come in late? ........brilliant goalkeeper as far as blocking the ball is concerned, but his kick-outs could cost us. ........Brendan M. is a super footballer but he has to go on a solo when he could kick the ball fifty yards to an alert forward. ........football is the name of the game - not ring-a-ring-a-passing without gaining any ground. But it's the first game and a win is a win, I suppose . However, Westmeath will be a different opposition compared to students."
Remember all the cafuffle about C Kilkenny playing laterally all year ? Unfortunately that's the way of it when teams play swarmed defences. As both sides alway had extra backs yesterday. A long kick is almost a certain giveaway of the ball. It's far from traditional but you see the most traditional of all teams (Kerry) refusing to kick the ball 50/50. And that's even with the likes of Donaghy etc in their forward line.

County Football Team 2020 - 2 Like(s)

Replying To Semperfidelis:  "Neither of the players I am referring to are old.27-28at most. My point is they always seem to be guaranteed a starting place regardless of their form which in all fairness has not been good for some time. This type of favouritism has no place in IC football and it will cost us long term."
That's a fairly wild accusation given that we have no idea what's going on behind the scenes. So it's hard to say that theres an agenda. And maybe there is an agenda. Who knows. But the point I'll continue to make is that its merely speculation from all of us one way or the other. There's a hell of a lot more to being on a County team than just showing up on a Sunday for a game. So I wouldn't be so quick to criticise turlough without knowing the ins or outs.

Lads it's an interesting topic. Carlow were in the very same position two years ago. Before Poacher. Poor numbers. Poor results. No plan. Not all the best players in. Turlough had done an excellent job after rainbow left by settling things down but he needed an aid. And in cake Poacher. By Turlough admitting he needed help it basically got us to where we are today. Poacher has transformed how this team play. He has brought a northern edge to things and has everyone bought into it. So if a team like Leitrim can get someone of that quality you could see the thing improving rapidly. On the issue of who you get in. You've to be very careful. Some of these great past players don't make good managers. Poacher wasn't a big name when we got him but he had coaching pedigree. That's what Leitrim need I feel. I just found the last few posts interesting as they were exactly the same kind of stuff on the Carlow forum two years ago

Replying To Carlowman44:  "Potential 15: 1. Kearney 2. Crowley 3. Lawler 4. Molloy 5. D Moran 6. Redmond 7. G Kelly 8. Gannon 9. B Murphy 10. Ruth 11. Foley 12. C Moran 13. Broderick 14. S O'neill 15. S Murphy I think if we can free up Sean Murphy and let him run from deep, his pace will create space and potentially a few fouls. J Murphy, A Kelly and Ledger just wont have the speed to stay with any of the Dubs"
Too many changes to a team that's a winning system. I doubt you'll see too many moves. Gannon might start. In general Dublin are going to be bigger, stronger and faster than a lot of our players. That's just the nature of it. I'm more looking forward to what's to come after the Dublin game. I'd love to see a performance full of heart Saturday week and then a huge push in the qualifiers against teams that you can measure the lads against. Only two teams in the country can even say they are close to the dubs so I won't be judging our lads too harshly Saturday week. Was delighted for them last Sunday and whatever happens against Dublin that won't change my opinion of them anyway. All roads to portlaoise

Back of the bike shed lads next week and sort it out. Anyway. Onto Sunday. Looking forward to seeing second outing. Offaly a bit further down the road with Maughan and have an extra game under their belt. I saw Carew talking about a new brand of football etc during the week so interesting to see if they stick to it when the squeeze of championship comes on. Regardless its a shot to nothing as next year or two is more important longer term. Good luck to management and players

Stephen Poacher - 1 Like(s)
Miracles is an understatement for what poacher has done. And lets be realistic it has been totally down to him. Turlough was no great shakes before him, but at least he recruited him and gave him the scope to work with the lads. Think back to pre poacher era. We werent even on the radar. Nobody could mention one of our players bar Brendan Murphy. He has put us on the map. When i see the guff here about carlow playing a lovely brand of football before poacher? Are you having a laugh? good gaa people?? what does that even mean? Meath drubbing in DCP 2014. Laois drubbing in 2013 and 2015. Westmeath drubbing in 2013. League after league of poor displays and disorganisation. No style of play, just give it to the one or two good lads and hope for the best. Other counties on here loved playing their 'footballing' neighbours carlow pre poacher. Of course they did as they could knock the sh*t out of us regularly. I for one am glad i got to see a carlow team promoted and have a few great championship days as i fear the worst when Poacher leaves

That was a sickener. Really thought we did enough to get the draw. It probably wasn't our best performance of the year but given the opposition and missing Broderick the lads probably did as much as they could have. It's very frustrating when you're dealing with decisions that are so baffling. I genuinely don't know what more defenders can do other than stand a forward up and put their hands out and surround him. And that happened 3/4 times in the game where they got frees. That's 3/4 scores which is huge in the conditions. All is not lost. We now know we are as good as anyone in the division. On to Leix we go

Realistically the best we can hope for is that we keep the thing afloat for the time being and hope that the colts program and all that bring some success in future years. This current crop won't make any major progress I don't think. So it's a matter of TOB doing the best he can with the group he has. And that's why it was nice to get the win Saturday but realistically it will be short lived and problems still exist. So he isn't the saviour of the game in Carlow or anything like that but at the same time he has taken on a job that nobody else would have taken after the state Rainbow left things in. We can't really over analyse the weekend. We all know that players and management have limitations. But what they did at the weekend was put in a performance full of pride and had a bit of bite to their game. Can't ask for much more

Looking at the league as a whole you would have to say regarding a definitive way of playing there has been strides. Sometimes it didnt always work but for the most part it seemed to suit the lads we have. In years gone by we would have ended the league with a whimper but good for confidence to finish strong. in relation to yesterday, special mention to jamie clarke. Terrorised wexfords backs when he came in. Puts to bed the notion youve to be a big man to play interco.

If he was that good I just can't imagine why he was dropped from the panel originally ? You'd want to be shooting the lights out at junior level to warrant a call up a week before a game

It's a shot to nothing for them. Probably a good thing. No pressure on them at all. Hopefully they can play with pride and a bit of passion and show their ability on a bigger stage.

Replying To Dualclub1:  "What a ridiculous post, "MLR bullied Eire Og" . Mlr are tough and came up with a game plan to win the game against all odds, credit to them. They have plenty of fine footballers that any club would love to have, far from brutal!! Maybe if our County footballers had the steely edge MLR have , we wouldnt be bottom of the pile."
Agree with that. We need a bit more of those commitment levels that rangers show in both codes. The town isn't where the football is anymore

Normally would be more football but said I'd take a spin in today. It's incredible what's happening in both codes given our population and resources. Really well done to the hurlers. It was heartening to see such passion and skill. This must be the greatest period for gaa in general in the county. Especially given that the haves and have nots have never been so apparent

Replying To fullbach:  "Happy to leave NCP with a win yesterday. Some great point scoring and could have had more. Never saw such a big attendance of Carlow supporters at a league match in my 20 years going to games. That in itself is testament to what O'Brien and co. have achieved in the last 3 years. Great to see Brendan in such good form again. Sligo couldn't break down our defence and became frustrated having to shoot from way out. Gannon, Crowley (what a marker), Broderick, St Ledger all did well. Check out interview on Ocean FM with a very dejected Sligo manager after the game. Keeps mentioning about how physical we are. Great to hear that - one ingredient we were scarce on over the years. Roll on Saturday. Ceatharlach Abú."
Listened to interview. Taylor seemed at pains to give us too much credit. Mentioned the soft goal giving us a cushion but we had them opened on numerous occasions, a goal was coming eventually. I often find it funny when managers bemoan a 'defensive' team. Its up to them to try and do something about it. He mentions carlow sucking the life out of the game. I would be more concerned about his teams lack of intensity in winning the ball back which left carlow cantering around the place. Good result for the bad guys,.

I have watched league games for a long time and the last three years have been the best there has ever been for what i have seen. The arse fell out of the championship this year granted which is unfortunate as its the impression people get left with. But crap football is finishing mid table in Division 4 for practically 30 years. You seem very negative towards him Hogg. While it wasnt perfect it was a hell of a lot better than the Dempsey, Rainbow eras

I see TOB is back at the helm next year. Hard to know what to make of it. Is Co Board settling as feel it's the safest bet or will there be a bit of a progression next year thanks to a bit of stability. I can't decide
