It's great that there's such enthusiasm on this board at present. We're like schoolchildren giddy at the promise of free sweets. Take a look back at the number of posts on this forum this last week. Must be a record. I'm heading down to the game, I'm sure there will be a big turnout of Carlow supporters. Hopefully we'll get the win and there'll be another record number of posts next week. Onwards and upwards!

Went to the game yesterday. A few observations: In the pre game warm ups the energy, enthusiasm and well organized nature of what Carlow were doing was evident straight away. Management should take great credit for this. The game itself was stop/start for the first 50 minutes. A lot of missed chances from both sides and you could see there were a few cobwebs. But it was exciting just the same. The game changed in the last quarter and the quality of the scores improved. Some marvelous long range scores from both sides. At the end you felt that both teams could argue they should have won. The second Westmeath goal was a square ball all day. I'm amazed there is not more comment on that. The Carlow keeper made two outstanding saves one in each half that kept us in it to be honest. I felt that while Carlow were energetic and enthusiastic there were moments when they could have been a lot more clinical. The team needs a few more good performances before the real confidence comes - and with that the ability to clinically to put away games. Brendan Murphy was outstanding. Always making himself available, invariably taking the right options and worked tirelessly throughout. Someone though needs to put their hand on his shoulder though and explain that referees don't protect players, that's not their job. He was appealing and appealing and eventually I think turned the ref against him. Westmeath players were constantly targeting him for off the ball treatment, which of course is unfair. Every good player will get this treatment and especially one who is known to react. He got a yellow card again yesterday. Carlow (I think) will improve a lot from yesterday. They went into the back yard of the bookies favourites (before yesterdays games) to win a point. They should arguably have won the game having looked dead and buried on two occasions. Looking for ward to the next outing.

Best of luck to the hurlers today. If they put their best foot forward I think they'll have too much for Antrim.

Replying To Brendandoyle:  "Lads we beat tipp in thurles. Tipp went to Longford today. Won by 2 . Longford had beaten dubs previous week albeit only 5 of all Ireland team on view in o Byrne cup final. This Carlow team team has great pace. Go to portlaoise and take it on. Nothing to fear."
Well said Brendan. I don't know if we'll beat Laois or not but we have absolutely nothing to fear. We have some very good pacey players and a bit of momentum behind us. Bring it on.

Replying To Hometown45:  "Too many changes to a team that's a winning system. I doubt you'll see too many moves. Gannon might start. In general Dublin are going to be bigger, stronger and faster than a lot of our players. That's just the nature of it. I'm more looking forward to what's to come after the Dublin game. I'd love to see a performance full of heart Saturday week and then a huge push in the qualifiers against teams that you can measure the lads against. Only two teams in the country can even say they are close to the dubs so I won't be judging our lads too harshly Saturday week. Was delighted for them last Sunday and whatever happens against Dublin that won't change my opinion of them anyway. All roads to portlaoise"
That's a nice post Hometown. Yeah, I think we need to be thinking of the Dublin game as a shot to nothing. In the unlikely event that we get something from it then that would be fantastic. Realistically though we'll probably be looking to learn what we can from it. This team and management have put their shoulders to the wheel this season and they fully deserve their place against the best team in the country. Some would say the best team ever.

Many thanks to the posters from other counties who took the time to come on here and express their best wishes. Fingers crossed we go on and win it. On my way to Croke Park now and I'm trembling with the excitement of it all.

Replying To fullbach:  "Mark Breheny SLIGO has retired from playing for the county after 17 years. He was the longest-serving intercounty footballer in Ireland but he reveals that winning a second Connacht championship or reaching an All-Ireland final would have meant more to him than extending that record: "I wasn't really hanging on for that, it was very much about winning a Connacht title every year. And trying to reach the highest I could go and getting to an All-Ireland final. I never stopped believing in that every year. I felt, 'why not? why can't it be us? If a Mayo fella can do it up the road, why can't we do it?' That was always my mentality with the Sligo team." Carlow take note - we are no different. Best of luck to all teams in 2018 Incidentally Carlow footballers (experimental side) beat Sligo at the weekend by 13 points. Can't wait for the start of the league."
On the subject of the challenge match results, it's very heartening that the lads are pulling out such great results. However the Carlow team are very fit for this time of year and obviously have promotion from Div 4 on the top of their priorities. That fitness may be giving a false shine to the challenge match results though, since I suspect that other teams may still be winding up their preparations and are far from their peak. Having said that, winning can become a habit and hopefully there will be a bit of momentum from those results coming in to the league. Fingers Crossed !!

Well, the game worked out like everyone said it would, Dublin won it. It was a terrific Carlow performance. Great guts and discipline. I cannot compliment players and management enough. I don't know what the GAA are going to do about refereeing and cynical play. Truth is they destroyed the game today. Linesman/referee got it all wrong for the sending off. Brendan Murphy was stopped in his tracks when trying to make a run off the ball when Carlow had a free. He and the perpetrator pushed and shoved one another. Dublin player gets away Scot free, Brendan gets a second yellow. I'm not trying to say we would have won. Dublin were too good to be brutally honest. But in that one moment the game was changed on its head. Look at that together with the ' home advantage' we were meant to have and the GAA can be rightfully accused of discrimination against weaker counties. The stand had hundreds of empty seats today.

Oh dear, we have the Losers mentality on here in spades. Wexford and Westmeath still have to play and we too have Wexford to play still. Granted the results haven't been what we would have wanted ideally. But come on, we keep saying we want the team to have a wibeing mentality, so why not start here - on the forum that purports to support Carlow footballers.

O'Byrne Cup match coming up next Sunday versus Westmeath at NCP. It will be interesting to see how we shape up against one of our Division 3 opponents.

Right, I was at the game and without the benefit of the action replay I made my comments on Saturday evening. I've looked at the sky sports/you tube replays and two things come to mind. Firstly the replay doesn't show the shirt pulling by the Dublin player before the confrontation and therefore gives a slightly biased view of the incident. However, the hauling down of the Dublin player by B Murphy looks quite different to my view of it at the time and I accept that it is entirely unjustifiable and it was a correct decision that he received the second yellow. There you are, I made a mistake! I think the reactions I have received from our Wexford neighbours may have some credence in the light of the above. They had a similar experience in our game with them. I don't often admit I'm wrong (ask my missus!), but on this occasion I think I'll just spit it out.
