The one that got away

Anybody read the Celt's coverage of this game? I had a look at it yesterday. How refreshing it would be if our local newspaper actually presented a balanced view of the game rather than the nauseating cheerleading that goes on in support of the management. I noticed the not so subtle dig at the Breffni faithful as "fickle". Poor effort.

Firstly, those of us who believe we need a new manager are not basing our view on last Sunday. That would be plain foolish. Rather, this view is formulated on a culmination of 4 years of management, which has produced very little tangible reward, despite solid resources and so much promise.

And as for the description of the management "playing a blinder", can someone please tell the author that we actually lost the game? I mean it's farcical stuff. We are obsessed with moral victories in Cavan, who cares if we lost, sure didn't we kick 0-15.

I can understand the disappointment on this forum after losing that game; however, I can't understand all the negativity.
As I'm not living in the country I haven't watched any of Cavan's games in the league this year. I've had to rely on reading this forum (which made out that we were a division 4 standard team playing against division 3 standard opposition in division 2) and listening to Northern Sound (which is hard to follow at the best of times.). It was very hard to get a clear and balanced verdict on the team (with no agenda, either way, towards the management team).
So last Sunday I got the GAAgo coverage online to see for myself what kind of performance Cavan were capable of.
What I saw, for most of the game, was a Cavan team well marshaled in defense. Strong and efficient in the tackle with great ability to turn the ball over. Fast counter-attacking football from the back, great layoffs and interchanges around the middle and the opposition's 45', and quick ball in to Argue, who was getting the better of Wylie.
A complete contrast to what I was expecting. Yet, when it came to the RTE panel's opinions after the game, all they talked about was blanket defense and inefficiencies going forward, as if reading from a pre-written report.
Did they even watch the game or just check the result after and jump to conclusions based on a prejudged opinion?!

The reason Monaghan won the game is because they got the momentum at the right time.
We gave away a few stupid frees at bad times and they got the bit between their teeth and drove it home. This comes down to inexperience on our behalf and a killer instinct on Monaghan's behalf. This can be worked on, especially the discipline.
But all in all, in my opinion we were the better team on the day and we can take a lot of positives from the game.

We're on the easier side of the qualifier draw and if we avoid Kildare or Laois we could have a handy enough run to the last 12, then it's a game against Meath or Cork to make an All-Ireland 1/4 final.
After watching last Sunday's game I believe Cavan are well capable of reaching a 1/4 final.

Apologies for sounding a tad positive, I know this isn't the place for positivity.

By the way, does anyone know when the draw for the qualifiers is?

I think every Cavan fan has a right to be positive and believe that progress is being made.i agree with SamuraiBlue sentiments. I live outside the county but attend as many matches as I can. I see a lot of progress being made without having 3 top players available. Monaghan would suffer if McManus was absent. A lot of sniping at management seems to be the order here, like saying Killian Clarke wasn't injured when clearly he was. I just hope the players don't take any notice of what goes here. We have fine young players progressing nicely, the majority of the county back you and the management to represent us. We support you. The time is now to park the spite . If you want, make your feelings known at convention. Now is the time for playing. Good luck and success to our seniors and minors. I look forward to many more enjoyable trips this year!

Ned_Stormcrow - you hit the nail on the head, the Anglo Celt will never give a balanced view of the match, not as long as the present Sports Editor is writing the articles. Sure wasnt he sitting beside the players on the plane going to and coming back from New York. In the addition to the Anglo Celt, let me also add Northern Sound to that list, another media source incapable of giving a balanced view given their relationship to the team.
Samuraiblue - I note that you didnt see many of the games this year, therefore, please dont judge Cavan Football on the Monaghan performance, yes, they played excellently for 50 mins of the match, Monaghan were poor for 50 mins, yet up the ante for the last 20mins and won the game - the sign of a good team. Cavan were at home, it was a local derby, so the least we could expect was a good performance. Management has been in situ for 4 years now, given the success at U-21, the least we could expect in that time was an Ulster Final appearance. We might get to the Q/Finals again, but what happens if we meet Dublin, Cork, Kerry etc etc?

enjoyed the game last week, only Monaghan got a few soft frees when the game was in the melting pot i think Cavan would have kicked on. Martin Reilly off for those two last frees probably cost Cavan, saw him hit 45's well in the league.
James Horan was very impressed with the fare on offer, somebody from cavan county board should approach him, to work with or instead of Terry, Terry needs help and i do not believe he gets much from some of those around him, i think their knowledge and experience is limited (except Mc Hale).
If cavan had all their best players available i am sure they could win the All-Ireland, not just Ulster. Think about that for a second....
However the clock is ticking, Rory Dunne, Mackey and those of that run are soon at their peak, no time to waste.
I am sure a big name manager, like Horan, would be seen as the statement of intent from the county board which could persuade players like Givney, Keating, Kevin Tierney, Lorcan Mulvey, young Dillon and Faulkner from Kingscourt, John Mc Cutchen (best midfielder in Cavan- glad he wasn't there last Sunday), Mc Kiernan from Kileshandra, maybe even manage Kiernan from Lacken, bring in young Thomas Galligan from the St Pat's team amd possibly pick up one or two speedy inside forwards from U21 or minor plus Killian Clarke to come back. Add that to the great panel already in place and tell me there isn't a Div 1 team there capable of winning an All-Ireland?
There is super potential there, brought through by Terry Hyland so far, but now is the time to get it together!!

"I note that you didnt see many of the games this year, therefore, please dont judge Cavan Football on the Monaghan performance",

Jaysus Deano that a new low, you now see fit to have a go at people who express their views as they see it. Guaranteed if it was a negative comments you wouldn't be so disagreeable. Deano there is one view on this... that there are multiple ones and what even more important is that people are entitled to them.

People can debate on whether we are making progress or not.
My only comment is that we cannot close out a game.
Kildare in the league were there for the taking.
Down in the league were there for the taking.
Monaghan in the C/ship were there for the taking.
We failed to win any of those important games.
Maybe we haven't got the know-how on the sidelines and Terry might need help with this aspect.

well how do cavan fans feel today? really should be playing donegal tommorrow in ulster final, even if lose they would prob get to all ireland quater final in croker. thats what this young cavan team needed , that loss to monaghon will haunt cavan for a long time if they dont get an ulster from the u21 titles they won. could it be possible that cavan may not make a breakthrough after all the underage success? this happened to limerick hurlers in early 2000s.

Still a little sickened, it's the usual routine for Cavan, out of Ulster at the first hurdle, and an early qualifier exit to a poor/mediocre outfit. We should be well accustomed to it, but the bitter pill is the fact that we had a lot of hope for these lads, but it hasn't materialized, and even after the Monaghan game the management were in bullish mood, talking long summer this, and qualifier route that, but the reality is, although they talked a big talk, they didn't back it up. It's time for them to go, and I for one would like to know what the delay is.

Overall it doesn't look like the breakthrough is going to come if we continue on this current downward trajectory.

I'd agree that the Monaghan loss will have a massive detrimental effect on this team for a long time unless there is a new manager brought in to address the weaknesses in their mentality and their discipline issues. You cannot underestimate the value it would have been for these lads to beat a division 1 team in the championship and make the final of Ireland's toughest province. It would have had untold benefits for them. But we fluffed our lines on the day, panicked and fell apart in the last 10 minutes.
