Leaving the park after that defeat tonight I just wonder did we put out the right team ??
I just wonder have we more or better talent in the County that has not been discovered ??
In conversation with a successful Cavan Gaels mentor ( he was associated with 10 of last County Championships) he stated that the great run that the Gaels had was down to finding new talent each year via street leagues and underage competition.
Well we have the underage but no Divisional teams to unearth new talent.
I now make a passionate call for Divisional teams to be set up without delay

Well said Tomsmith, you'll find theres very few would agree with you though, because they have their terry tinted glasses on! New manager needed quickly and a new selection process as well. Not to run down anyone, but one of the issues Cavan have is the Senior League/Championship is not competitive enough and we have too many players on the panel not playing Senior Club Football.

You're certainly like a dog with a bone regarding divisional teams Tom ! I agree in principal with what you say but not with how you would implement it . Lets call a spade a spade here . What you propose is basically county trials open to the public . There would be little affinity between such teams and supporters and little merit given to winning out such a competition . For players the onus would be on personal performance rather than the overall benefit to the team . Such an environment might not be best to judge players on how they make decisions in high pressure situations .
The obvious alternative would be a county championship with amalgamations such as is done in Kerry . I think every player in the county should have the option of playing senior championship football if they are good enough as is the case in Kerry .

I feel that Terry tinted glasses is a bit strong, I feel a lesser explanation ie "That the know not what the do"
would be more appropriate. I feel that we should not be too severe on Mr Hyland as he may not be to blame himself more so his outlook for Cavan is the long term while most of us want instant results

The interest in the long run just isn't there anymore for players,

and as for youth development with young kids these days there are so many other sports been played eaach night of the week and I feel for one think the GAA is falling behind in keeping the development of players and interest there while kids are playing other sports as well other nights of the week ,

I coach at U16 level we are in division2 we have 4 games and if lucky enough to get to a semi and then final we'll have 6 competitive games in the league. and 2r3 in the championship I think... due to this I havent had more than 12 at training so far the kids wont come out as there playing other sports on other nights of the week and choose there rest days when GAA training is on as there isnt many games or the same effort to be put in to it
Anyway i could go on and on but the GAA is falling behind other sports in keeping players playing right through the age groups to senior

It'd be interesting to see the drop off from u16,minor and u21 players in all the clubs in the county...

Interesting point Dr Phil, your comments come a few days after Joe Brolly's comments on the GAA's neglect of the lifeblood.
I'm involved at both underage & senior levels and I can see clearly that the despite the huge efforts from the County Baord Coaches and indeed, parents and others who give their time to coach at club level, the actual County Board and GAA HQ dont actually give a damn about the lifeblood of the GAA.
Im also involved in other sports, soccer included, and its my view that the enjoyment that used to be in the GAA is not as it was, and the kids seem to be enjoying soccer more.
From a senior perspective, players are starting to feel neglected because of the lack of respect shown to the club league & Championship. The County team takes precedence over everything, club games being cancelled, county players not allowed to play with their clubs etc You'll find that in most of the other successful Counties, the league & championship goes ahead as scheduled, and the Cavan County Board should take note.

After last nights debacle something has to be done for Cavan football.
It all right playing junior footballers but when the hard grafting has to be done you need players that played at a high level should it be within Cavan or elsewhere.
We need Divisional teams to be set up where management can see players and judge them, not to see them being exposed in competitive football at Div 2 league,
Set up Divisional teams right away and let the County Champions stand alone with say 5 Clubs in each division .
Let no one of say the first 20 of Mr Hylands panel be selected.
It would give the County selectors food for thought to see the numbers of other good footballers that might be out there

I feel you are a little bit severe on the current County Champions.
This gaels team is and has been great ambassadors for Cavan Football for a long number of years and while the competition has been poor for the past 10 championships the Gaels( The cream has come out on top) have come out on top each year.
I feel that Gaelstud may have a point in relation to the morale among the team.
If Donal was in charge would things be much better, I don't know but I think he would jump at Divisional teams just now to seek out our best talent
