Gowna bridge 20-year gap

Gowna were worthy winners over Killygarry in claiming their eight Cavan SFC title after 20 years waiting.

The side co-managed by Dermot McCabe and Fintan Reilly were beaten in last year's final after a replay and that experience stood to them today as they defeated the Crubany outfit 2-13 to 1-9 at Kingspan Breffni.

They signalled their intent early as Conor Madden teed up midfielder Ryan Donohoe for the first goal on five minutes after Oisin Brady opened the scoring for Killygarry.

Donohoe, Conor Brady and Tiarnan Madden (free) tagged on points to give Gowna a 1-3 to 0-3 lead before Jody Devine's charges fired back in the form of a levelling goal from Cavan veteran Martin Reilly.

Gowna captain Ryan McGahern lifts the Oliver Plunkett Cup.

But the Longford border men finished the opening half stronger to take a 1-6 to 1-3 advantage into the break as Robbie Fitzpatrick, TJ Fitzpatrick and Conor Brady again split the posts.

Gowna were threatening to run away with the game early in the second period when they had another purple patch and hit four unanswered scores before Oisin Brady got Killygarry up and running again.

Devine's men, to their credit, battled back to within four points but couldn't get any closer than that during the closing stages and were floored in the 57th minute when substitute Oisin Pierson buried home Gowna's second major.
