Ethan Jordan’s late free proved the difference as Tyrone inflicted Roscommon with their first defeat in this year’s championship at Dr Hyde Park this afternoon.
A thrilling contest played in glorious conditions finished 3-16 to 2-18 in favour of the Red Hands who bounced back from their Ulster SFC preliminary round defeat to Armagh six weeks ago.
Darragh Heneghan’s goal had given the Connacht champions an ideal start to this one, but Malachy O’Rourke’s side picked off scores and moved into the lead through Niall Devlin’s point in the 18th minute before the excellent Eoin McElholm rattled the Rossies’ net three minutes later.
Ronan Cassidy would add a second Tyrone goal in the 25th minute, with Diarmuid Murtagh and Jordan trading two-pointers late in the half which left the scoreboard reading 2-11 to 1-9 at the break.
The home side bossed long portion of the game’s third quarter, reducing their arrears to two and hitting the front again with an Enda Smith goal which made it 2-14 to 2-13.
Skipper Murtagh doubled the lead for Mark Dowd’s men, but a Mattie Donnelly goal after that would land as a hammer blow, although the hosts got level through Paul Carey two-pointer, it was Jordan that would have the final say for Tyrone.
