Cork attacker Ciaran Sheehan has been forced to retire from inter-county football due to a knee injury, the Irish Examiner reports today.

Having been plagued by knee cartilage injuries, the 30-year-old Eire Óg clubman has been advised by medics to step back from the inter-county game. 

"My knee has got to the point where competing at inter-county level intensity is no longer an option as the long-term health of the knee is at high risk if I continue to play at that level," Sheehan told the Examiner.

Sheehan helped the Rebels to All-Ireland SFC glory in 2010 before moving to Australia four years later to play with AFL side Carlton.

He’d be named Rookie of the Year in his first season but hamstring problems hindered his progress Down Under and he returned to the Cork squad last year.

Sheehan’s decision to retire comes as a blow to Leesiders boss Ronan McCarthy as he prepares his charges for a Munster SFC semi-final date with Limerick or Waterford on July 10th.
