More of the same for Kilkenny club teams

This Kilkenny supporter could have a long wait between rounds of the club championship

Kilkenny clubs have been told that there won’t be much change to the fixtures for the coming year.

A lot of clubs feel that the fixtures situation needs to be addressed in the county as they feel that there is too long a period during the summer without competitive games.

This year, saw something like 16 weeks between stages of the league/championship as the club scene was put on hold to focus on the county team.

However, in his address to next Monday night’s County Convention, Kilkenny GAA secretary Conor Denieffe stresses that the issue will not be resolved in the near future.

“There is no doubt that the issue of club fixtures continues to cause the most dissatisfaction in Kilkenny, and in many other counties nationally,” writes Denieffe.

He added: “Firstly, any changes to National Fixtures, if they come, are unlikely to be implemented in 2020 since the Master Fixture list is already in place.

“Secondly, and not to prejudge the report, but unless a window is created during July/August for club games I cannot see any great improvement in the club fixtures situation.”
