Antrim football captain Peter Healy says manager Enda McGinley’s departure from the team earlier this week came as a surprise to the players.

Following defeat to Leitrim at the weekend, it was confirmed on Monday that the Tyrone man would be stepping down from his post as Saffrons boss after two seasons in charge of the team.

Speaking to BelfastLive.co.uk, Healy said McGinley deserves “a lot of credit” for improving the squad since taking over.

“No, as players we weren’t expecting it. Enda spoke to myself after the Leitrim game and the players - everyone was surprised by it," he stated.

“The team that played the Tailteann Cup game at the weekend was a very young team and lots of lads were gaining Championship experience.

“The team that is going into next season is a young, fit, hungry team and that’s not the team that was there before Enda arrived. He has to take a lot of credit for bringing Antrim forward.”
