Hopes still alive for 2020 inter-county championships as Ireland moves to Level 3, not Level 5

The GAA's hopes of staging the 2020 inter-county championships are still alive - just.
Things looked bleak when NPHET recommended that the whole of Ireland should move to Level 5 of the Resilience and Recovery Living with Covid-19 plan, where no sporting events can take place. However, the Cabinet sprung a surprise decision this evening by instead approving Level 3 restrictions for all counties, joining Dublin and Donegal in that stage.
Level 3 which takes effect from midnight on Tuesday for three weeks until October 27 means 'elite' matches including the higher levels of GAA can go ahead but without spectators. The inter-county senior championships are planned to get underway on October 24, three days before the restrictions are due to be lifted. A move up to Level 4 would also allow for the inter-county championships to be played.
Earlier today, the GAA announced that all club games at all levels are suspended with "immediate effect and until further notice."
