Wicklow in referee crisis

Lack of referees in Wicklow

The subject of a lack of referees was broached at a recent Wicklow County Board meeting.

Delegates were informed that for club hurling games, there was a serious lack of referees available, while across the board wasn't much better.

It was revealed that a number of games scheduled during the year may have to be called off due to the shortage of match officials.

Most counties in the country are struggling with the same problem, but Wicklow seems to be in dire straits.

Of the 35 referees on the county board list, only 12 are actually officiating at matches and there was a plea made for clubs to put at least one person forward for the role.
