Senior Championship Quarter-Final

Athlone 0-13 The Downs 1-10

Athlone's senior men will have to meet The Downs again as they bid to qualify for the senior championship semi-final after the sides played out an exciting draw in the quarter-final in TEG Cusack Park.

Despite opening the scoring through John Connellan, Athlone were second best early on and trailed by 0-5 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.  A couple of Connellan frees brought Athlone back into the game, before excellent points from Jordan Marshment and Alan Gaughan had them level.  The Downs regained the lead with a point from a free after Paul Bannon had been black-carded, but a Danny Reid score on the stroke of half-time sent the sides in level at 0-6 each.

Athlone had the worst possible start to the second half when they conceded a goal straight from the throw-in, and despite John Connellan opening their second half account with a free, two further Downs points meant that they trailed by four after 40 minutes.  Athlone then enjoyed their best spell of the game and another Connellan free, followed by fine scores from play from Noel Mulligan, Alan Gaughan and Connellan brought them level.  A John Connellan free then put Athlone into the lead with five minutes remaining, but The Downs struck back almost immediately with a fisted effort.  Noel Mulligan put Athlone back in front with a sweetly struck '45', but The Downs equalised in injury time with a point after a patient move to send the game to a replay, which will be played in TEG Cusack Park at 2.30pm on Saturday 30th.

Junior Championship Semi-Final

Athlone 1-10 Multyfarnham 3-21

Our junior men's team's great run in this year's championship came to an end when they were defeated by a very good Multyfarnham outfit in the semi-final played in TEG Cusack Park on Sunday.  The sides were level with two points apiece after an evenly matched opening 10 minutes, with Athlone's scores coming from a Joe Fallon free and Richie Greene, but Multy took control after that and kicked some excellent points, to just a pair of frees from Fallon and Greene, to lead by 0-12 to 0-4 at the break.

Multyfarnham started the second half as they had finished the first and added four points to their total before Richie Greene opened Athlone's account.  Multyfarnham then scored their first goal from a rebound after a fine save from Paddy McGettigan, and they added their second soon after.  Athlone kept plugging away and Joe Fallon and Richie Greene added further points, before David Cleary scored a superb goal late in the game.  Multyfarnham had the last word, however, and added a third goal in injury time to seal a 3-21 to 1-10 win.

Athlone:  Patrick McGettigan, Shane Galvin, Andy Lynam, Eoin Fahey, Eoin Jordan, Emmet Collins, Michael Doolan, Diarmuid Martin, Sam Omukoro, Rory Donnellan, Dermot Bannon, Darren Costello (0-3), Joe Fallon (0-4), Benny Martin, Richie Greene (0-6) Subs Used:  Sean Dowd, Colin O'Leary, Shane Kilroy-Glynn, Declan Byrne, David Cleary (1-0), Aidan St John.
