ACL Div.5:  Mullingar Shamrocks 3-6 The Downs 1-16

 

This ACL league match played at The Downs  featured the good, the bad and the ugly of Division 5 football. The Downs exhibited more of the good on the night or did so at the right time and secured the league points on offer. Playing against the wind in the second half The Downs were generally on top in this period and finished with four unanswered points after Shamrocks with a goal from Ross Corroon and a long-range point from cousin Garry had levelled the match. Shamrocks trailed by a point at the interval (1-4 to 0-8) after missing several good chances that might have well secured the victory. Ross Corroon scored 1-2 at this stage of the game; Pearse Corroon and Niall Hannigan added a point each. 

On the resumption, Niall Kevin and Jimmy Conroy exchanged goals but 20 minutes later The Downs held a 1-12 to 2-5 lead as they outscored the Shamrocks boys 0-4 to 0-1.  A second goal by Ross Corroon from a great Ross Brady pass and a point from Gary levelled the match but that ended our scoring for the night as The Downs closed the scoring with four successive points. The first came from a well struck Philip Martin 45, awarded after Daragh Ryan saved spectacularly from D. Conroy.

U14 Feile Skills Competition

Well done to Mairead Newman who represented the club at the U14 Feile Skills Competition and gave  herself and the club great pride in finishing 2nd in a tough competation.

 

Also to our under-8 Ladies Football team who lined out for the first time v The Downs at the weekend .
