Mullingar Shamrocks club notes

April 24, 2017

ACL Div.1 Athlone 2-13 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-4

The contribution of Sean Dempsey to both clubs was recognised with a minute silence before the throw-in.

Shamrocks, without several probable championship starters, were first to make an impression and two early points by Patrick Fagan and Dylan McDermott and a brilliant Philly Shaw save secured a 0-2 to 0-0 lead after 15 minutes. Athlone made no impression on the scoreboard until the eighteen minute but then scored 1-2 in the space of two minutes, the points coming from John Connellan and Noel Mulligan frees. The goal came after a long cross field pass failed to reach its intended destination and Daniel Reid took full advantage to score the opening goal. Athlone added four more points before Patrick Fagan responded with a Shamrocks point just before the interval (1-6 to 0-3). Niall Hannigan pointed immediately on resumption but then John Connellan took control and was quarter-back like in his control for the remainder of the game. He scored 0-5 before putting Mickey Greene through for the home side's second goal. Daragh Daly scored Shamrocks goal midway through the half on an evening in which Philly Shaw, Ryan Blundell, Eddie Moore, Davy Coyne, Efe Siode, Patrick Fagan and Alan Cashman showed best for Shamrocks and David Gavin and Killian Daly were added to the list of the walking wounded.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Philly Shaw: Ryan Blundell, Eddie Moore, Davy Coyne; Efe Siode, Micheal Curley, Killian Daly (Cormac Murphy); Kieran Gavin and Daragh Daly (1-0); Alan Cashman, Dylan McDermott (0-1), Pearse Corroon (Paddy Joyce); Darren Keena, David Gavin (Neil Hannigan 0-1), Patrick Fagan (0-2).

ACL Div. 3: Mullingar Shamrocks 4-13 Killucan 1-13.

There was never any doubt about the destination of the points in this ACL Div.3 match in Springfield and although many were playing their second game in 24-hours the players gave of their best to the final whistle. The final action of the day belonged to Shamrocks with Paddy Joyce earning and then scoring a penalty sending David Bryan in the wrong direction as he rolled the ball to the corner of the net. The most notable feat from a Shamrocks perspective was the scoring performance of Gary Corroon. The ageless wonder of the Shamrocks set-up lined out at centre-field and kicked 0-8 in a fine display of dead-ball kicking. Darren Keena's 0-4 is also worthy of note.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Killian White; Daragh White, Davy Coyne, Daragh White; Eamonn Breslin, Aaron Purcell, Niall Hannigan; Pearse Corroon and Gary Corroon (0-8); Michael McKnight, Paddy Joyce (1-1), Matthew Kelly (Cian Roe); Darren Keena (0-4), Alan Cashman, Ryan Blundell.

Under-14 Girls Football League: Mullingar Shamrocks 2-3 Ballycomoyle 1-6

Mullingar Shamrocks under-14 girls came close to losing their unbeaten record on Tuesday evening in Springfield when coming from behind to snatch a draw with a good Ballycomoyle team. The shooting on both sides was a bit wayward but minutes from the end Robin Wrafter scored the golden goal that secured a share of the points for Shamrocks. Mia Gilligan with a great total of 1-3 was our only other scorer on the night.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Chloe Flood; Áine McKenna, Anne Marie O'Reilly, Robin Wrafter (1-0); Jasmine Haugh, Niamh Raeside, Eve Hynes; Jenna Kelly and Máiread Newman; Leah Glynn, Sarah Corroon, Abby Smith; Molly Byrne (Kaylin McNally), Mia Gilligan (1-3), Sinead Battle.

Easter Skills Camp

The weather threatened to be a spoilsport but the threat was not fulfilled and we had three great days of football skills coaching and fun for the 90 boys and girls who took part in the club's Easter Skills Camp in Springfield which was organised and directed by the club's coaching officer Robbie Boyle. Thanks to all those, young and old, who helped with the three days of intensive coaching and most important of all thanks to the young boys and girls who made the camp such a happy place for all over the three days. The fun and games ended on Friday afternoon with the traditional Pizza Party.

Congrats, Tadgh

Mullingar Shamrocks congratulates Tadgh Sheridan on his victory in the All-Ireland Boy 1-29kg boxing final in the National Stadium on Friday night. Tadgh is a member of our under-12 football squad and has been boxing competitively for the last six months and since then has been crowned Louth Open Champion, Longford-Westmeath Open Champion, Michael Andrews Champion, Leinster Champion and now ALL-IRELAND Champion.
