Brendan Cummins' bid for a 10th M Donnelly All-Ireland Poc Fada title was thwarted by Clare's James McInerney in the Cooley Mountains today.
The legendary Tipperary custodian finished in third place as Newmarket-on-Fergus clubman McInerney came out on top against Westmeath's Brian Connaughton by a margin of 20 metres.
McInerney covered the 5km course in 50 pocs and 78 metres while Connaughton came home in 50 pocs and 58 metres.
50 pocs and 34 metres was sufficient to see defending champion Cummins clinch the third spot.
Cork's Aoife Murray claimed the senior ladies title, finishing with 27 pocs and 68 metres while, in the U16 events, Offaly's Cathal Kiely and Galway's Sarah Healy were crowned champions.
