Westmeath swap maroon for black

Eyebrows were raised when Westmeath took the field in black rather than their usual maroon jerseys for a senior football challenge against Leitrim in Killucan yesterday.

It transpires that they had loaned their set of maroon jerseys to the hurlers, who were hammering Offaly in the Leinster SHC round-robin series a few miles up the road in Mullingar at the same time.

Westmeath's alternative strip is green, but these jerseys were not an option as it would have led to a colour clash with Leitrim. So they were left to wear the black jerseys they use in training.

For the record, the 'Westmeath All-Blacks' prevailed on a 3-14 to 2-13 scoreline with John Heslin accounting for 0-10 of their tally and Kieran Martin, John Connellan and Lorcan Dolan getting the goals. Leitrim's goalscorers were Conor Gaffney and Ronan Kennedy.
