Austin Gleeson admits he found it difficult to hold back the tears while doing a TV interview just moments after Waterford's All-Ireland SHC semi-final replay defeat to Kilkenny last month.

The brilliant centre back was asked to say a few words to Sky as he collected the man of the match award.

"It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do in my life," the GAA/GPA Opel Hurler of the Month for August said yesterday.

"I was leaving the field in tears. I was trying to hold them back while doing the interview. I couldn't look at the camera, I couldn't look at the fella asking questions. I just wanted to get out of there as quickly as I could.

"I would have rather been anywhere else in the world at that moment. I walked back into the dressing-room to fellas who had given so much to Waterford and nearly everyone was in tears."

The Mount Sion clubman will have an opportunity to atone for that disappointment when he lines out for the Waterford U21s in their All-Ireland final showdown with Galway.
