Derek McGrath will remain at the Waterford senior hurling helm until 2019.

McGrath has been in charge of Na Deise for the past two seasons and had one more year left on his existing agreement. But, after an incredibly successful 2015 campaign, Waterford chiefs have moved to tie up their man for the next four seasons.

The three-year extension means the De La Salle clubman, who turns 40 next year, will be charged with completing the project he started and hopefully taking his new-look, young Waterford side all the way to All-Ireland glory.

This year, Waterford earned promotion to Division 1A and went on to win the league title outright, beating Cork in the final by ten points. They went into the championship unbeaten but suffered a Munster final loss to Tipperary and an All-Ireland semi-final defeat to champions-elect Kilkenny.

With a wealth of young talent at their disposal, Waterford appear to be on the cusp of a major breakthrough and McGrath has been identified as the man to oversee their medium-term development.
