Tragically, a young Waterford footballer has drowned in Thailand.

Twenty-four-year-old David Houlihan, who died while holidaying in the popular Ko Samui resort, played football with his local Dungarvan GAA club.

Only last Friday, he produced one of his finest performances in the Dungarvan colours, striking a wonderful point during the 3-15 to 3-9 defeat to Ballinameela.

Yesterday, the club suspended all activities and flew their flags at half mast when news of the tragedy broke.

"He was such a great player and had won championships and even captained the team that won the western championship," club chairman Tony Ryan told The Irish Daily Star.

"This tragedy has hit the community here big time. The flags are at half mast and the grounds are closed. He was such a likable fella, very popular with a great circle of friends and people just can't believe it has happened."
