Patient approach pleases McGrath

Waterford manager Derek McGrath feels that their tactics of playing a patient game worked for them against Laois.

McGrath revealed to the Waterford News & Star that Laois' tactics forced the Munster side to make a call on how they would approach the game.

And McGrath was delighted with the end result as Waterford cruised to victory to pick up their first win of the campaign, following their opening day draw against Limerick.

"It was a very tactical approach from Laois," said McGrath. I knew it was coming and we had two choices; either go full court press; seven on seven and push our man up on him, but we chose not too.

"We chose to make it a game of chess. It's a difficult scenario because they have it down to a tee and they are good at it. We chose to keep our own men back and be patient. I would argue that the winning of the game was the three points just before half time.

"That little bit of a gap we got, we went in 11-8 up and that was the key period. We just felt any type of ball that went into our full back line, there was a tendency to give away soft frees and that was keeping them in it.

"Once Cha Dwyer went off, things opened up, we would be very happy with our overall attitude opposed to the first half."
