MacDonncha seeks under-21 reshuffle

Waterford under-21 selector MacDara MacDonncha is adamant that the only way to get the best out of that age group is to have the same management team as senior level.

Speaking following the crushing defeat to Cork in the Munster U21 hurling championship semi-final last week, MacDonncha stated to the Waterford News & Star that something had to be done to help improve the under-21's chances of success.

"I think really to be quite honest to get some coordination, the best way to do it is to have a similar senior management looking after the under-21s," said MacDonncha.

"Then you don't have any conflict and you have better coordination because it's not there at the moment."

MacDonncha added that it was impossible to get the full squad together before the clash with Cork as eleven of the under-21 squad are on the senior panel also.

"This is not an excuse, but it's a reality. The Cork match was the first time those fifteen players went out together on the field. It's very difficult if you have eleven players on the senior panel, it's very difficult to get them together.

"It's just the way it was. We didn't have the chance to play a game with those players. You would have had some guys there playing who wouldn't have known each other very well, that's the reality unfortunately."
