Shannon Gaels Cul Camp 2016 was held last week in Frank Golden Park and what a success it was with almost 70 children taking part! This year for the first time, we added a cultural aspect to the camp in addition to football and hurling. The weather cooperated and even though it was a little hot, the rain held off for the most part.
Each morning the children were greeted by the enthuastic coaches and different aspects of both hurling and football games were worked on. New skills were introduced and the children were given the opportunity to put into practice what they had learned. During the afternoon session for the cultural aspect of the camp, the children were thought some Irish Language and got an introduction to Irish music and dancing. The highlight of the week was when the children performed a rendition of the national anthem that they had learnt.
The camp provided all the boys and girls with an action-packed and fun-filled week of activity which revolves around maximizing enjoyment and sustaining participant involvement in Gaelic Games and the Irish Culture.
Overseen by the New York Minor Board, our camp nevertheless couldn't run without our many teenagers who help out and the volunteer parents. Special thanks to Mary Haran for registering everyone, Maggie Rooney for being at the field almost every day, Mary Haslam Abernethy for teaching the kids Irish, Leonora Breen for working with the kids on music and dance. Our teens were coaches, assistant coaches and helpers making sure the kids got water, reapplied their sunscreen, and were generally supervised.
