The GAAmbler: Donegal will have to Erne it the hard way

June 11, 2016

Donegal manager Rory Gallagher

Four weeks into the championship season and the GAAmbler has tipped 15 bets and managed to win an incredible 14 of those, with the only losing bet being a 0.5 point stake on a man of the match bet.

For this reason alone you should be following our twitter account @TheGAAmbler1 to avail of the tips that don't make this preview where we have a 100% win record so far this season.

Moving on to this weekend's bets we have previewed three games with the clash of Fermanagh and Donegal being the pick of them, with this game also providing this weekend's NAP.

Looking at the outright odds the bookmakers have made Donegal massive 1/6 favourites, which in my opinion is ridiculous when comparing the two teams' form overs the last two years.

The reasoning behind this stance from the bookmakers probably stems from the fact that Fermanagh still haven't beat a big team when it really matters, they may or may not do that tomorrow, but it is my belief that they will come goddam close to it.

Which is why I was originally very tempted to go with Fermanagh +6 at an attractive 8/11, but I have instead decided on under 1.5 goals at a delectable 5/4 with Ladbrokes, with a 3.5 points stake.

My reasoning behind this is that the Fermanagh game plan is heavily reliant upon not conceding goals, which over the last two years they have been very good at.

This approach also means that they don't score many themselves. Donegal, of course, are renowned for the lack of scoring chances they offer up to the opposition and while their forward line does offer more goal potency I believe that Fermanagh's defensive spirit and doggedness will severely limit a Donegal forward line operating with a half fit Michael Murphy.

My second tip for this weekend's games is Offaly +2 points at 10/11 with Stan James with a points stake of 2.5 points. This game brings together two teams on the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of team morale.

Offaly have been one of the most impressive teams in Ireland this year, and were quite unlucky to miss out on promotion which would have been a massive achievement for them.

Westmeath on the other hand were relegated to Division Four after plying their trade in Division One in 2014. Westmeath on their day are undoubtedly a very talented side having showcased this in the Leinster championship last year but there are a gluttony of reasons why Offaly should hold the advantage here.

The first being the form of Bernard 'Panda' Allen. He is a serious footballer who seems to finally have found his feet at inter-county level, himself and Niall McNamee are game winning forwards. Furthermore, player departures surfacing this week from the Westmeath camp are never ever good signs the week before the championship, this is especially alarming when you consider the game time that these players received throughout the league.

Paul Greville, Shane Dempsey and Ray Connellan were all regular starters and crucially contributed to the scoreboard.

My final reason for this bet is Pat Flanagan, he was the man in charge when Westmeath operated in the top tier of the League and he knows this team inside out. Pat has a point to prove and I believe that he will have his team immaculately prepared for this test.

My final pick for this weekend's action is Cork and Tipperary and the selection here is over 33.5 points at 4/6 with Bet 365 with a two points bet being advised.

Goals should be on the cards here as both these teams generally have very frail defences, for example Tipperary scored 12 goals in the league the second highest overall but also conceded the most points in Division Three.

Cork paint a similar porous picture from the league, where they conceded by far the most in Division One and managed to score the most goals. They were only six points behind Division One top scorers Kerry.

Both these teams also have a serious habit of chopping and changing their team line-ups which always aids a high scoring affair.

I am going to attach a weather warning to this bet as showers are forecast so I recommend waiting closer to the time of the game to hear what the weather is like before placing your bet.

Recommended bets:

  • Donegal and Fermanagh under 1.5 goals @5/4 with Ladbrokes. 3.5 points (NAP)
  • Offaly +2 @10/11 with Stan James. 2.5 points
  • Cork and Tipperary over 33.5 points at 4/6 with Bet 365. 2 points
